The Dunwoody Nature Center’s Butterfly Experience held September 10-11th was a great success once again this year. Ticket holders gained access to one of three butterfly tents and enjoyed an up close and personal look at these beautiful and delicate creatures. The experience featured six species of native butterflies in the tents and over 600 butterflies were there in all!

In addition to time in butterfly tents, visitors from all over the Atlanta metro area enjoyed crafts, games, and education stations along the Nature Center’s Pollinator Pathway, where they learned about unique and different pollinators. The weekend's event included food, drinks, and the sale of various merchandise, including Butterfly Experience t-shirts and DNC honey, collected from its own hives. Live performances featured musicians, magicians, bubbles, reptile shows, and birds of prey shows!

Holly Loscavio, DNC’s Environmental Education Director, explains “The Butterfly Experience at Dunwoody Nature Center has grown over the years! It began as a small community program in 1998 with just a few activity tables and a small tent with some butterflies; participants were about 200 people. It quickly grew in size and popularity with an all-time high of 3500 attendees! We have now spread it out over two experience days and include each day’s event crafts, activities, three large butterfly tents, food, and entertainment for all to enjoy. Our focus throughout the years has always been education. We love exposing people to the importance of pollinator species. Butterflies are a fun and beautiful way to teach people about the importance of insects that pollinate our native flowers and trees.”?

“The Butterfly Experience was the perfect way to wrap up the summer with an event that was fun for the whole family! This year featured even more crafts, games, and performers than?ever before; while still offering opportunities to learn something new around every corner.?It was an awesome opportunity to connect with other like-minded organizations in Atlanta?who had information and activity tables set up at the festival.” – Darcy Johnson,?Environmental Education Manager

Dunwoody Neighbors shared in our June issue that 2022 marks the nature center's 30th anniversary. For three decades DNC has been inspiring the love of nature and cultivating environmental understanding and stewardship by conserving and enhancing Dunwoody Park, educating children, families, and adults of all ages about the natural world and our place in it to motivate environmental awareness.
