Dunnes Stores Holds Top Spot As Back-To-School Boosts Irish Retailers – Kantar

Back-to-school shopping and Halloween preparation buoyed supermarket growth in September, as inflation fell slightly, according to Kantar.

The market researcher reported that take-home grocery sales in the four weeks to 29 September 2024 were up by 6.1%, compared to the same period last year.

As children returned to school and families prepared, sales volumes increased by 3.6%, due to frequent store visits, and shopping trips increased by 1.5%.

Grocery inflation stood at 2.76% in the 12 weeks to 29 September 2024 – a slight decrease of 0.09 percentage points, compared to the previous period.

As consumers moved to school lunches and family dinners in the back-to-school season, Irish households spent an additional €2.6 million on fresh vegetables and €1.9 million on fresh fruit.

September sales also saw an additional €1.4 million spent on ambient bakery breads, nearly €1 million on frozen goods, and €1.5 million on carbonated soft drinks.

Dunnes Stores Adds Iceland Food Concessions To Two Dublin Locations

Iceland Foods has added concessions to two Dunnes Stores locations in Dublin, as the company expands its partnership with Ireland’s top retailer, The Grocer reported this week.

Concessions stocking a selection of Iceland’s own-label products have opened in Dunnes Stores at the Square, Tallaght, and in the Point Village.

Iceland already supplies a selection of its exclusive partner brands to around 80 Dunnes locations, but the new concessions are the first locations with Iceland’s own-label products on sale.

The retailer closed in Ireland last September, when its parent company – Merton Stores Ltd – entered liquidation.

The Journal reported at the time that staff in Blanchardstown, Portlaoise, Fingal, Limerick and Shannon were reportedly given as little as 15 minutes’ notice when the stores closed unexpectedly.

This partnership with Dunnes will see the return of a number of cupboard staples for Irish shoppers, as well as products from Iceland’s exclusive brand partnerships with Sides, Greggs and Slimming World.
