The Ralph family has a long and successful association with BWG Foods and in particular with the SPAR brand. Maev Martin talks to Ger Ralph, owner and operator of SPAR Dublin Airport about convenience retailing in an airport and celebrating 60 years with SPAR. The SPAR Dublin Airport store opened in 2018 and was one of the first four stores in the country to incorporate the new SPAR design. The 900 square foot store is located in the arrivals hall in Terminal 2. “We opened the current store in the airport in 2018, but we have been operating in different locations in the airport since 1996,” says Ger. “We are delighted with the new design because it suits our business and fits in well with the modern design experience that is Terminal 2. We are getting great feedback from both Irish and international travellers.”

Tesco Ireland has partnered with Enerpower to install more than 2,000 solar PV panels at its stores in Liffey Valley and Naas. The move is the latest in a series of measures aimed at creating more energy efficiencies across its business. The solar roof panels will provide just under 20% of the electricity needs of the stores and generate 745,000 KWh of electricity, which will save 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. In total, the two stores will generate enough power annually to run approximately 180 homes. Speaking at the store in Liffey Valley, Minister of State Jack Chambers said, “For a store of this type, it makes great sense, and I hope to see others follow this lead.
