5 insights from RE+ we just had to share!

RE+ is always a highlight in the clean energy space, and this year was no exception. With over 40,000 professionals in attendance, the buzz was undeniable. From agrivoltaics to AI in legal risk management, we walked away with valuable insights.

Here’s what we learned:

  1. Community engagement is key. Attendees stressed the importance of involving local residents early in project planning. One developer shared how starting community outreach sooner could have significantly shortened their timeline.
  2. Sheep and solar power could be the future. Agrivoltaics and solar grazing were hot topics. Developers are increasingly exploring partnerships with farmers to maximize land use by combining energy generation with agriculture.
  3. AI is the next frontier for managing legal risks. Many developers are looking for innovative ways to predict and manage litigation risks with landowners. AI has the power to transform manual processes. Could it be the solution to identifying collaborative landowners?
  4. EPCs face standardization challenges. A common theme for EPC firms at RE+ was the lack of standardized terminology, which often causes confusion and inefficiencies between EPCs and clients.
  5. Data centers present a huge opportunity. The growing demand for data centers, especially in areas like Northern Virginia and Dallas, is driving renewable energy adoption.

Power, proximity, and potential: Key factors for data center site selection

Why do some data center projects thrive while others face serious challenges? The answer often boils down to location.

In Red Oak, Texas, a massive data center project is underway. It's spread across 292 acres (that's about 221 football fields!) and will have eight two-story buildings. Together, these buildings will cover 3.4 million square feet. This Texas-sized project shows us just how massive modern data centers can be.

It also highlights the importance of choosing the right location. A suitable site, particularly in fast-growing regions, must meet substantial power requirements and accommodate future expansion needs.

Using AI for environmental due diligence? Here’s why human expertise is still critical?

While AI offers efficiency in site selection and environmental due diligence, depending solely on it can be risky. In a recent piece, our CEO, Robin Laine, outlines three key reasons why human intelligence remains indispensable.

One example? Humans oversee data quality, which directly impacts data reliability.

The saying "garbage in, garbage out" applies here — the quality of AI outputs is only as good as the inputs. Humans are essential for curating reliable data, ensuring it's comprehensive, high-resolution, and thoroughly evaluated.

For instance, Transect’s database has been refined by experts over the past eight years, pulling from around 4,000 data sources to provide accurate insights.

So, why does data depth matter?

Limited datasets, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s critical habitat data, can lead to false positives or negatives in AI-driven project assessments. Many species occur outside their designated critical habitats, meaning that without expert oversight and reliance on AI, developers may face unexpected risks.
