A duckling ?? eye's view - The Figured Internship

We are the 2023-2024 interns at Figured, and as our 10-week journey comes to an end, we would love to share our experience with you.

@Michael I came to Figured with no previous work experience, looking to kickstart my software development journey with my first internship. Although you can meet the team and apply through Summer of Tech, I applied directly through the Figured website. Naturally, I was nervous leading up to the interview, but my nerves were immediately settled by friendly smiles and a discussion that felt more like an energetic chat than an interview. Figured values more than technical skills, and it's clear from the moment you walk into the office.

@Ruth Figured is not just a software company; it takes a wide range of skills, teams, and specialities to keep the ship sailing. All teams, from development to sales and customer success, work closely together, which is something Figured was keen to share with us interns. While the main focus of the internship was to help us progress as developers, we had plenty of onboarding sessions with each of the teams and got to learn about the whole company!

@Ivan The day-to-day at Figured sometimes didn't even feel like work. With the beautiful views of the viaduct, friendly faces and coffee trips, there were plenty of occasions to give my brain a break. The work itself offered endless opportunities to learn, be creative, and challenge myself. The supportive network of developers and their trust in us gave me the confidence to wade into deeper waters and pick up issues that I otherwise might shy away from. This included bug fixes, page refactors, new features, and more. Seeing changes I made in production as early as the first day was a very special feeling.

@Samantha Each of us was integrated into one of 5 development teams and assigned a buddy who helped us ease into the work. Immediately, I felt like part of the team. In our daily stand-up team meetings, I could listen to what the rest of the team was working on, ask questions, share what I was working on, and compete with the other teams on the daily Stuff quiz! Although assigned to one development team, I could ask any of the other developers for help or guidance, and they were always happy to assist.
