Dublin Bus Employee Spotlight

Meet Shay Neary, a Dedicated Dublin Bus Driver

With nearly 33 years behind the wheel at Dublin Bus, Shay’s career is a testament to dedication, adaptability, and a passion for his work. Since joining the company in 1992, he has driven across multiple depots, including Conyngham Road, Summerhill, and Clontarf, where he now plays a key role in mentoring new drivers.

A Change in Direction

Before joining Dublin Bus, Shay worked as a long-distance haulage truck driver. Reflecting on his career shift, he shares, "I was looking for a change from long-haul driving and thought Dublin Bus might be a short-term move. I didn’t know much about how the company operated, and honestly, I assumed I’d eventually transition into domestic haulage. I told myself I’d give it a year and see how it went. Now, 33 years later, I never made that move—and I have no regrets."

Finding Fulfilment in the Job

One of the most rewarding aspects of Shay’s role is mentoring new drivers, a position he took on last year at Clontarf Depot. "Stephen Gilligan, our Area Operations Manager, suggested I apply for the mentoring programme. It was a bit daunting since I hadn’t done an interview in over 33 years, but it turned out to be an incredibly fulfilling experience. Helping new drivers, sharing my experiences, and guiding them through challenges is something I really enjoy. I feel like I’m giving something back."

Beyond mentoring, Shay also finds joy in the daily interactions with customers. "For some people, the bus journey might be their only social interaction of the day. I recognise my regulars, and I love that connection—it makes the job even more meaningful."

Proud Moments and Career Highlights

Shay has had the opportunity to work at major events throughout his career, including the Pope’s visit and the launch of the Universal Routes. However, his proudest achievement remains his role as a mentor. "Being part of the mentoring programme in Clontarf has been a real highlight. Helping others build their confidence and skills is something I take great pride in."

A Passion for Running

Outside of work, Shay is passionate about running, a hobby that has taken him around the world.

"I got into running later in life, thanks to a friend at Dublin Bus who encouraged me. I’m not a fast runner, but I love it. Over the years, I’ve completed the Dublin Marathon multiple times, as well as the Chicago and Tokyo Marathons. Running is a great escape, and it’s taken me to incredible places."

Despite currently recovering from an injury, he remains determined to keep going. "If I recover in time, I plan to either walk or slow jog the New York Marathon in November. That’s my next goal." Shay’s journey is a fantastic example of how a career at Dublin Bus can evolve in unexpected and rewarding ways.
