Dublin Bus Employee Spotlight

Celebrating our employees - this month the spotlight is on Paul McDaid Graphic Design Executive Dublin Bus (Bus átha Cliath) .

Job description:

Paul joined the company in May 2007. In his role, he creates engaging and creative graphics, helping to shape the visual identity of Dublin Bus. He is a guardian of the iconic brand, responsible for planning illustrations to managing marketing materials, printed collateral, digital assets, social media posts, and the website. Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders on design-related projects.

What inspired Paul to work for Dublin Bus?

Paul told us, “I had seen an advertisement for the role of a Graphic Designer to help roll out the new Dublin Bus brand that had been redesigned by Image Now. The chance to work with such a large company and be part of the rebrand project was really exciting. I joined the company as the first in-house graphic designer and worked on that project, and here I am sixteen years later, still rolling out designs”.

Enjoyable aspects of the job?

Paul explains, “I really enjoy the variety in the design work, problem-solving, visual creation, and the collaborative work with the different teams across the company. He added that “there are quick wins too in the sense that you have a limited time to turn around a project. This means creating an idea from concept to design stage very quickly, which can generate really good results”.

Tell us about a big project you’re currently working on?

Paul shared with us the work he is doing as a part of the Dublin Bus website redesign, “My role as one of the Project Managers is to look after the Front-End Design, particularly the User Interface and to ensure it has been informed by a good UX process. I’m also checking that it’s on brand and our tone of voice is present”.?

Proudest achievement to date?

Between 2008 – 2010, Dublin Bus introduced “On Street Information”. Paul explained “It was a very intriguing and worthy project that meant the Dublin Bus Internal team got to work with some of the leading design experts in On Street Public Transport Information Systems”. He continued “it was cutting-edge at the time and was on par with similar systems in London and New York.?The Bus Linear Diagrams and newly Designed Timetables housed in a ‘True form Style Bus Stop’ were well received by the public at the time. To have been part of that for me will be one of the highlights of my career. While TFI systems eventually replaced them, I think they set the standard and gave an idea of what was possible”.

The team at Dublin Bus:

It’s a team of two graphic designers, a shared service across the company. Paul’s role is team lead, managing all design projects from conception to delivery and ensuring outputs are of the highest standard.

Interests:

Once a week, Paul plays over 40s non-contact Gaelic football in Navan, which is great craic and good for his mental health and fitness. He is an avid GAA fan who proudly supports the Dubs, but all three of his children cheer on Meath. In his spare time, Paul uses his skills as a volunteer for his local football club, Navan O’Mahoney’s, doing all their graphic design work. Paul is passionate about his work and particularly loves typography (typefaces, fonts) and would study them all day. He believes logo design is the best part of graphic design – you get to be a part of shaping a business’s identity and can make it look and feel unique.

We’re hiring:

Dublin Bus is now recruiting for the following roles:

  • Mechanics,
  • Engineering Operatives,
  • Bus drivers.
