Volkswagen’s EV Heritage
Electric vehicles are all the rage now and everyone wants to have their slice of the EV market. However, not many know that Volkswagen isn’t entirely new to the game. Volkswagen’s EV tryst goes way back to 1972 when the German brand’s Centre for Future Research developed and tested the Elektro Transporter.?
Based on a VW T2 Transporter, the electric vehicle was powered by a lead accumulator. Then in 1976, an electric version of the Volkswagen Golf was also developed. However, these EV tests were abandoned due to a lack of powerful battery technology. Back in the day, lithium-ion technology didn’t exist and those lead-acid batteries were too heavy while also unable to hold enough power.
Volkswagen got back on the EV track in 2013 when it showcased the e-Golf prototype. However, it didn’t go into production. Then in 2019, VW launched the ID.3 and finally put an EV into series production.
