Dubai's Pay-by-Palm Technology: A Glimpse into the Future of Public Transport
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is introducing an exciting new technology that will revolutionize the way commuters use public transport in the city. The "pay-by-palm" system, expected to be fully operational by 2026, allows passengers to link their palm with a Nol card. Once linked, commuters can scan their palms at smart gates, and the fare for their journey will be automatically deducted. This innovative project marks a significant leap towards a more seamless and contactless commuting experience.
During the Gitex Global exhibition, RTA officials demonstrated how the system works, showcasing the convenience of this technology for public transport users. The pay-by-palm system will not only be limited to the Metro, but will also expand to buses, trams, and other forms of public transport. Additionally, plans are in place to integrate this system into retail shops across Dubai, making it possible to pay for items using the same technology.
This initiative is part of RTA's larger vision to adopt an account-based ticketing system, allowing passengers to move freely across the city’s transport network using just a simple hand scan. By eliminating the need for physical cards or even smartphones, the RTA is taking a bold step forward in leveraging advanced biometric solutions to make travel even easier.
Moreover, the system is expected to provide tourists and students with enhanced options, such as discounted Nol cards that offer exclusive deals at more than 800 vendors, including tourist hotspots and retail outlets. This innovative technology not only promises to make commuting simpler but also strengthens Dubai's position as a global leader in smart, futuristic transport solutions.
