The Dual Reward of Giving Back

Recently, we revamped our purpose statement as an organization to moving our world forward by delivering what matters.

This goes beyond just delivering packages to individuals and organizations around the world.

For UPSers, “delivering what matters” also means delivering support, opportunities, time, money, and meaningful impact to as many people in our communities as possible.

In the past few years, we have made great progress. I am extremely proud of our people and feel fortunate to work with passionate UPSers globally, who volunteered more than 20 million hours from 2015 to 2020 and will volunteer a total of 30 million hours by 2030 in underserved communities.

We recently, announced the recipient of our annual Jim Casey Community Service Award, UPS’s highest community service honour, recognizing UPSers who embrace our legacy of volunteerism and giving back. I’m so proud to say, we had a finalist from our team in Canada – Enrica Uva. Enrica is?entering her 27th year of service at UPS and is a strong proponent of her community, devoting countless hours to supporting those in need.?She is Vice-President at Foundation Generations, an organization that provides breakfast to underprivileged kids in over 100 schools in Montreal. Furthermore, she is President of the Association des Familles de San Mango, supporting the elderly, and widows, and Vice-President of the Congrès National des Italo-Canadiens organizing cultural events in the Montreal area. Enrica is one of many UPS volunteers making a real difference in their community. Enrica, congratulations on being recognized as a finalist the entire team at UPS Canada is so proud of you and grateful for your community service.

With outstanding volunteers like Enrica leading the way in Canada, we’re launching a new giving program that allows UPSers who log 50 volunteer hours to receive $250 to donate to their favourite charity. In 2021, our team devoted 16,000 volunteer hours, and this year we’ve already reached approximately 35,000. We’ve also reinstated charitable gift matching, meaning when UPSers donate to support causes important to them, the UPS Foundation will match the donation up to $1,000.

Some other ways we have showed up and given back to the communities around the world in the past few years include:

• UPSers planted more than 15 million trees from 2015 to 2020 and will plant a total of 50 million by 2030 in underserved communities.
• UPS pledged one million hours of employee volunteer service worldwide in support of mentoring and educational programs in underserved Black communities.
• UPS Supported 31,000 women small business owners via UPS’s Women Exporters Program since 2018.
• UPS funded $580K in grants to Black, LGBTQ+, Hispanic/Latin and AAPI communities small-business owners through the UPS Proudly Unstoppable program.
• UPS will positively impact the lives of 1 billion people by 2040 through investments made by The UPS Foundation.

Individually, we care about finding little ways to make communities around us better; and collectively, coming together brings us closer, helps us achieve more, and creates a lasting bond that helps grow our culture. By giving back, we create an infinite cycle with the potential of multiplying, thus creating a lasting effect in communities, in Canada, and across the globe.
