A DUAL-PURPOSE TAX DEDUCTION

Are you short on CEU’s?

How about going to a conference instead of maxing out your online CEUs this year?

I know, most of you are self-employed, and you don’t get PTO. You have a hard time leaving the office, but you could probably use a break. I married a counselor, and I know you guys in the helping profession have a hard time taking time for yourself. If you go to a conference, you can check off your CEUs for the period, and take a mini-vacation.

Your fees, meals, and travel expenses are all tax-deductible on the dates of your conference.

Depending on where you decide to go, that could be a significant deduction. Granted, it’s not like going to a tropical island for a week, but you can at least get out of town for a while and also take care of those CEUs you’ve been putting off.

When you’re self-employed, it’s important to keep in mind that maximizing your deductions and minimizing your tax liability is key. Just part of the joys of being your own boss!

Side note: Your CEUs are subject to being audited by your board, so make sure you keep a record of the courses you’ve completed! My husband has had to submit proof of CEUs in the past, so keep that in mind. Also, everyone grumbles about the auditor, but they’re just doing their job, and if they weren’t and people got away with skirting the requirements, your hard work would be meaningless. Something to keep in mind :).

The ACA’s annual conference is right around the corner! Are you going? If so, make sure and keep track of every expense for tax purposes. Oh, and try to enjoy yourself a little while you're away from the office.
