Dual Mission Summit, Skills-Based Hiring in Tech & Key Policy Leader Announces Retirement

For those of you who attended the convening with The Attainment Network , CareerWise Colorado and Colorado Succeeds last week: great to see so many familiar faces from across Colorado, and the country! I know Denver will also be welcoming a national audience for the P3*EDU Conference (Sept 28-30), Educause (Oct 25-28) and the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities (APLU) (Nov 6-8) annual meeting in the coming weeks. If you are through town, please drop me a line! It would be great to convene a few small get-togethers with those of you visiting Colorado.

Speaking of get-togethers, mark your calendar for the next ‘One Dupont West’ happy hour on Tuesday, October 25 at 4:30pm. Denver location to be announced soon, but in the meantime, let us know if you plan to join us by adding your name here!

And, finally, speaking of other meetings making their way to Colorado: the fourth annual Dual Mission Summit hosted by Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs, November 2-4. Curious to better understand the dual mission model in higher education? Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser , president and CEO of Colorado Mountain College and Dr. Marion Ross Fedrick , president of Albany State University in Georgia recently joined Ramona Schindelheim , Editor-in-Chief at WorkingNation on the Work in Progress: A WorkingNation Podcast podcast (listen here). They talked about the dual mission model and its promise for learners and communities. Want to join in on the discussion? Register here for this year’s conference.

I enjoyed reading about one of our Colorado-based colleagues recently in WorkShift: Taylor McLemore , managing director of the Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator. Taylor talked with Paul Fain about how skills based hiring is (or is not…) happening across the tech sector. Given the shift to skills-based hiring in many facets of the labor market in Colorado, I was interested in Taylor’s take on the trends in this space.

A reminder that the Roadtrip Nation Colorado road trip applications are being accepted until October 16. Please share the opportunity across your network - particularly with learners from communities off the Front Range. Roadtrip Nation will select three learners to join them in the famous green RV for an expense-paid trip around Colorado to discover the promise of new careers across the Centennial State. More details here.

And from “One Dupont West” to “One Dupont Circle”: a well-deserved congratulations and best wishes to Terry Hartle , the senior vice president for government relations and public affairs at the American Council on Education (ACE), on his retirement after 30 years with the organization. I had the pleasure of working with Terry when I was a newbie to Capitol Hill and his fingerprints are on nearly every piece of higher education legislation passed over the last three decades. Thank you, Terry, for your commitment to and leadership in higher education.

Spotlight on Colorado Education and Workforce

Last week we highlighted week two of Colorado’s Workforce Development Month activities, focused on advancing Colorado’s economic recovery. This week, we spend some time looking at the Future of Work. As the world of work undergoes massive changes due to artificial intelligence, automation, globalization – our workforce is “working” (no pun intended) on how to adapt. The Office of the Future of Work has provided a few resources for employers including a Talent Development Playbook, shared some remote work case studies and provided a brief from the National Governors Association (NGA) on how to reimagine workforce policy in the age of disruption. If you are looking to stay up-to-date on a number of the activities across the Office of the Future of Work, I suggest you follow Katherine Keegan on LinkedIn. She has some excellent articles, highlighting the developments at the intersection of education and employment in Colorado.

Next week, for week four, we will share the resources from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) regarding upskilling, reskilling and the acceleration of apprenticeships.
