Dual Diagnoses? another emerging trend in M.S.?
As the host of the podcast Living with M.S. Truth be Told, I have the priviledge of interviewing the most resilient people living with M.S. www.truthbetold.ca. I am also in a unique positon of spotting emerging trends in people living with Chronic Illnesses.
Its been a long time since M.S. was primarily a Northern European Disease. I have my own theories about why the disease has spread globally but both Neurologists and Pharma disagree. So, we will leave that as it stands. However, what I find most interesting and, certainly worth a serious double take are the amount of young people (15 - 29) who are experiencing dual diagnosis.
What's staggering is that the M.S. diagnoses follows a patient living multiple years with a gut diagnoses. Chrohns, IBS, Celiac. One patient told me of a nightmarish experience of an interaction between the DMT for Chrons and the DMT's for M.S.
As my Irish Granny used to say "it doesn't take a blind man on a galloping horse" to see that there is something here that needs to be seriously looked into. We, those living with M.S. know about Gut Bateria and M.S. But, when the emergence of dual diagnoses is so prevalent I think it is worth a "look see" The burning question for Societies, Pharma and the Medical community is "Who takes the lead?" Dog whistle for Who gets the money?
I urge all intersted parties, or stakeholders if you prefer to look at this emerging trend before someone has a serious, lasting or life threatening interaction with Multiple medications for their dual diagnoses.

5 年Sorry Cynthia, I didn't? hear of that term in my community work.? It was always cross addicted when servicing clients with two separate addictions.? Usually a hard drug (cocaine, which while the client could stay clean the "gateway" drug could be a softer more recreational drug? Alcohol, cannabis. It is the side effects of the two medications that I was really addressing however thanks for the clarification.?

5 年Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes there is a connection between MS, celiac disease, IBD etc... because they are all autoimmune disorders. The immune system is set off to attack our own “normal” cells so it isn’t uncommon to see patients present with these different conditions together. But dual diagnosis has a specific meaning which I often understand as having a mental condition and possibly also a substance use disorder. So I am not sure if the term used in this context can be confusing. Thanks for highlighting the connection. I do think many research scientists are looking into why and how our immune system is set off and develop these various diseases. Thanks
