The King's Speech puts science, innovation and technology at the heart of the legislative agenda for the coming year

The King’s Speech highlighted numerous reforms as the new government delivers on its manifesto priorities. The speech had several key measures for science and technology:

  • We will seek to establish the appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful artificial intelligence models
  • We will harness the power of artificial intelligence and strengthen safety frameworks
  • We will?pursue sustainable growth by encouraging investment in industry, skills and new technologies

The King’s Speech briefing pack?sets out a legislative programme for DSIT, referring to:

The?Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, which will?strengthen our defences against evolving cyber threats. This bill will ensure that more essential digital services than ever before are protected, empowering regulators and increasing reporting requirements to build a better picture in government of cyber threats.

The Digital Information and Smart Data Bill?which will harness the power of data for economic growth, support a modern digital government and improve people’s lives. It legislates for three innovative new uses of data: Digital Verification Services, the National Underground Asset Register and Smart Data Schemes (which were also a manifesto commitment).

DSIT will be bolstered to better serve the British public through science and technology

We will expand in both scope and size bringing in experts in data, digital and?AI?from the:

This will unite efforts in the digital transformation of public services under one department, and form part of wider efforts to launch DSIT as the digital centre of government. We'll be working closely with the Cabinet Office and the Treasury, to maximise the potential of digital, data and technology to deliver for the British public.

Great to see information about the UK government's Flicker accounts - however, I can't see a Crown open licence on them. DSIT pictures seem to be all rights reserved, and the UK government and No 10 accounts are sharing under an old CC licence (CC-BY-NC-ND 2.0) which isn't technically an open licence. The equivalent licence to the OGL and OCL is CC-BY 4.0. Be great if the accounts started using this!
