DRT vs. line-based on-demand transport

DRT vs. line-based on-demand transport

In times of cost-cutting and growing environmental awareness, it is becoming increasingly important to design mobility offers that are both efficient and tailored to individual needs. Demand-responsive transport offers flexible solutions that adapt to local conditions and passenger requirements.

But what different types of on-demand transport are there, and how do line-based models work? In this edition of the ioki insights newsletter, we explore the various approaches and show how the line feature from ioki enables the efficient organisation of line-based services.

How line-based on-demand services work on the ioki platform: the line feature in detail

When discussing different types of on-demand services, one key question arises: how can line-based DRT services be efficiently managed on the ioki Platform? The answer: with our line feature.

Unlike traditional scheduled services with fixed routes, line-based on-demand services don’t follow a set path. Instead, each trip is triggered by a pre-booking, which marks the start of the line. Along the way, only the stops that have been booked in advance are served. This reduces unnecessary journeys without passengers and ensures optimal resource use – a win for operators, passengers, and the environment.

With the feature Lines, operators can either manually create lines in the Control Centre or integrate planning data from other tools. The feature offers a wide range of customisation options, making it highly flexible and adaptable to various mobility concepts. For example, you can set fixed arrival and departure times at specific stops to facilitate seamless intermodal connections at transport hubs and improve integration with other modes of transportation.
