Drowning in Overwhelm? 3 Lifelines to Pull You Back to Shore

Drowning in Overwhelm? 3 Lifelines to Pull You Back to Shore

I often tell people about my experiences at sea, I must have been out into the ocean about three times only but every time the weather turned I ended up in a force 10 gale and I believe sailors say it can’t get much worse. You become aware of your mortality very quickly when nature shows its power.?

Do you ever feel like life is tossing you about in a stormy sea, leaving you struggling to keep your head above water?? Shirley and I are having a rough ride of it at the moment like so many other people across the world, it is like overwhelm is engulfing us, and we feel like we're drowning in responsibilities, emotions, and worries.?

But my training is helping me to navigate through it at the moment, for just as a skilled swimmer navigates rough waters, there are strategies to help regain control and find your way back to calmer shores.

Let me share some with you just in case you are struggling at the moment.

As mindfulness pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn once said, "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf."

I start my day by anchoring myself with Breath:

This is something I share in many videos and audios and when the waves of overwhelm threaten to pull you under, the first step is to anchor yourself in the present moment with the breath.?

Close your eyes and take a deep breath, focusing all your attention on the sensation of air filling your lungs and then slowly releasing.?

At this moment, there is only breath – no past regrets, no future worries, just the here and now.?

This simple act of mindful breathing can provide a powerful lifeline, grounding you amidst the chaos and offering a sense of stability.

Also, chart your course with prioritization:

When you're drowning in a sea of tasks and obligations, it's easy to feel directionless, unsure of where to turn next. In times like these, it's essential to chart your course by prioritizing what truly matters. Take a step back and assess your responsibilities, separating the urgent from the important. Then, create a clear plan of action, breaking down daunting tasks into smaller, manageable steps. By focusing your energy on the most pressing matters and letting go of what can wait, you can navigate through overwhelm with purpose and clarity.

It is so important to buoy yourself with self-compassion:

In the midst of overwhelm, it's common to feel self-critical, berating ourselves for not being able to handle it all. However, this only adds weight to our already heavy load, dragging us further into the depths of despair.?

Instead, practice self-compassion – the life jacket that keeps you afloat in turbulent times. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, acknowledging that it's okay to struggle and make mistakes. Just as you would offer support to a friend in need, extend that same compassion to yourself.?

By nurturing a gentle and understanding inner dialogue, you can rise above overwhelm with resilience and grace.

So what is the conclusion to what I have shared today?

Feeling overwhelmed and out of control is a common experience, but it doesn't have to define your journey.?

By anchoring yourself with breath, charting your course with prioritization, and buoying yourself with self-compassion, you can navigate through even the roughest seas. Remember, you are not alone in this struggle, and there are always lifelines within reach to guide you back to calmer waters.

Take a deep breath, prioritize your path forward, and be gentle with yourself along the way. If you find these strategies helpful, or if you have your own tips for managing overwhelm, I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.
