See the UPDATES at the end of the post!
John Naisbitt said "We are drowning in information but starved for knowledge." What better place to see this infoxication than on LinkedIn. Let's make a comparison to intoxication.
Are you getting too many Influencer posts and not enough content from your connections in your feed?
Well, it might be at least partially your fault! One might say you started a few too many drunken conversations. :) Here are the steps you can take to do a "Factory Reset" on your feed!
Influenced
Many believe that Influencers get priority by the LinkedIn feed algorithm.
But there's a lot that influences what you see on your home page. Too much of it was likely chosen by you at some point.
As such, you could use a little sobriety check to stop seeing them in your browser feed. You might want to do this NOW - before you get a date with the new LinkedIn interface and does who-knows-what to your feed. :|
Un-influenced
Thanks to Jeff Young, the LinkedIn Guru, () for pointing this out to me. To quickly remove Influencers, News and Companies, do the following:
1) Go to your Profile page...
2) Scroll to the bottom of the page, to the Following section.
(Note, if you want to stop pestering your connections each time you change your profile, set Notify your network to NO.)
On an Android phone, the Following section looks like this...
3) You may see the "See # More" (as shown above). If so, click on all of those in and after the Following section. Doing this shows all the rest.
4) Click Following (PC) or Unfollow (Android) on those you no longer want to see in your feed.
After doing this, you should have a cleaner feed AND more content from your connections!
Under the Influence
Now if you want to keep the bar conversation going and maybe even liven it up a little, you can really clutter your feed. Here's how to see all possible Influencers, Channels, and Publishers for adding!
1) Go to the Recommended for you page. It should look like the following...
2) Search for the text "See More" after each section...
3) Click the words "See More", as it is actually a link. Doing this expands another couple rows.
4) Do this until you don't find "See More" on the page anymore.
5) Scroll through them all - page by page - and look for any that you want to add.
6) Check those you want to see on your home page. They will then show as a checkmark.
Take It Outside
Just like bad arguments in a bar, you may want to have others "take it outside". There may still be connections or people you at some point followed who are posting a lot of stuff you'd rather not see in your feed. Here's how to stop seeing all content from them:
- Go to your feed.
- Find any of their recent updates.
- Hover your mouse over the timestamp in the upper-right of their name. It will turn into a "V" symbol.
- Click the "V" symbol.
- Choose the option to Unfollow the person.
That's it! It's as clean as the algorithm will allow. If you want anything cleaner, you may want to check out beBee.com, the Affinity social network where you control 100% of your feed. "I'll drink to that!"
Notes:
- If you use the LinkedIn Pulse app, it has a setting that should notify you when your connections have new posts! However, there are 3 issues with it: 1) You will still see MOSTLY news, like Editor's Picks, as it is deemed a news app - even after cleaning your feed, per above; 2) I confirmed it missed posts published from my connections, 3) At times, it doesn't notify at all, so it is completely unreliable.
- If you really want to find recent posts published by your connections/followers, you have one option. But note that it is very manual and may only go back several hours, not days: A) Press the END key and wait a couple seconds. (You may see the rotating circle at the bottom. Repeat this process for as far as you want to go back. B) Then search the browser for "published a post". (This jumps to any new content from your connections!)
- If you use a browser, you will still see sponsored ads and updates like "People in your network have new connections", even cleaning out as much as you can. The good ol' algorithm! ;)
- Everything is up for grabs with the new interface that is rolling out! Check the LinkedIn blog for updates on that. UNHAPPY about it? Sign the PETITION ...so...LinkedIn might LISTEN: https://www.change.org/p/mark-jury-bring-back-our-linkedin-services
Results
I am seeing 100% of the content I want and an occasional "Sponsored" or "Promoted" update depending on browser or app, respectively, that you can quickly ignore by always looking for that word in the upper-left of a post... With the following exceptions:
- "Suggested for you" Sponsored updates with options to "+FOLLOW". (This will add companies BACK in your feed.)
- "Popular course you may be INTERESTED in" that has an icon instead of a person's photo to the left of the update. (Thanks for the cross-sell, Lynda/LinkedIn/MICROSOFT.)
- "Popular with people in..." updates with options to "+FOLLOW". (This will add Influencers BACK in your feed.)
Should I FOLLOW them again?! Ah, NO, but THANKS!

7 年UPDATE after doing all steps to remove the FOLLOWING "fluff": I am seeing ONLY content from my connections/followers and an occasional "Sponsored/Promoted" (browser/app) post (that you can quickly ignore by always looking for that word in the upper-left of a post). ...With the following exceptions every few updates: - "Suggested for you" Sponsored updates with options to "+FOLLOW". (This will add companies BACK in your feed.) - "Popular course you may be INTERESTED in" that has an icon instead of a person's photo to the left of the update. (Thanks for the cross-sell, Lynda/LinkedIn/MICROSOFT.) - "Popular with people in ..." updates with options to "+FOLLOW". (This will add Influencers BACK in your feed.) ......Ahh, NO THANKS!!

7 年The easiest is to use the upper right-hand drop-down box on the actual post in your feed. You can Hide that one thing, Unfollow completely, or Report if you think it's inappropriate for the business platform.

7 年Excellent article, Jared. Thanks very much for the mention. I am always looking for a filter to slim down what I see on my home page. If you want to "uncheck" the things that you are following it is quite simple to edit your profile and scroll down to the "Following" section and select what you want to unfollow by pointing to the word "Following". When you point at it, it changes to "Unfollow". Clicking "Unfollow" will take that instance out of your home page feed.
