You know nothing about the Ocean: there is more to the ocean than just Biodiversity, Plastic, or Sailing.
By Emma-Claire Fierce
When we think of ocean, the narrative often circles around biodiversity, plastic pollution, or the allure of sailing across vast waters. While all of these are undeniably important, My experience of swimming across the ocean—bare-armed, wearing a swimsuit, alone while setting a French record in Japan and in northern waters—has uncovered a more profound lesson: the ocean is not only a reflection of nature, more a metaphor for life itself with the challenges and opportunities we face in business, leadership, operations and communication.
The ocean does not just contain our history; it shapes our present and holds our future.
Through my ocean crossing swims, I’ve come to understand that the ocean is more than just a backdrop; it is an untapped universe of lessons about resilience, strategic thinking, and the constant need to innovate in the face of uncertainty. As a CEO or Operations director, you’re tasked with navigating complex, ever-shifting environments managing public perception, and connecting your teams to the company end-public. In this sense, the ocean offers profound insights that can be applied to your business needs.
The Ocean as a Mirror to the Unknown
Swimming alone in the open water strips away all distractions. The gentle sting of jellyfish, the bioluminescent glow of algae under a starry sky, and the calm yet powerful presence of sharks beneath the surface—each element represents a key lesson in managing risk, resilience, innovation and the need for beauty in the business world.
When I swam through swarms of jellyfish, their grace and persistence in adversity mirrored the challenges we all face in communication. Much like your team navigating a crisis or adapting to a shift in needs or trends, the jellyfish embody the principle of resilience. They thrive under pressure, just as your brand must thrive in the face of rapid change.
The stars above, guiding me through the darkest nights, were a constant reminder that, even when navigating uncertainty, there is an unbroken thread—a larger vision. In business, that thread is your long-term vision. It’s a reminder that strategic direction provides the light you need to make the right decisions, even when the path is unclear.
And sharks? They teach us the delicate balance between power and respect. Just as sharks move gracefully and without fear in the deep waters, leaders must exude confidence and respect in their messaging and positioning. It’s not about aggression, but about maintaining composure and strategic direction in an ever-changing market.
The ocean, in all its unpredictability, teaches us: there is no finish line to strategic success. Like navigating a market that constantly shifts, every move represents a decision—a commitment to evolve with the tides, no matter how challenging.
What the Ocean Teaches About Excellence
Excellence in communication, much like swimming across an ocean, requires more than just the basics; it demands a mindset shift. Success is not about reaching a singular destination; it’s about a constant commitment to mastery, continuous learning, and remaining adaptable in the face of uncertainty to maintain excellence.
In the ocean, there are no clear markers to guide you, just an endless horizon. Similarly, in business, there are no predefined formulas for success. You must carve out your own path, using data, intuition, and resilience to keep pushing forward. Each move, whether through calm waters or turbulent waves, is an act of continuous, courageous learning—a reminder that excellence is a journey, not a destination. Courageous learning ? Yes, because deep real learning signifies you accept the fact you know nothing : it takes courage to admit you are dumb.
For directors, this means constantly refining your strategy, staying agile, and focusing on mastering the skills needed to engage and resonate with your audience, even when the landscape is unpredictable. Excellence doesn’t come from staying static but from embracing change and pioneering new ways to communicate with your audience, especially in times of uncertainty.
