Drop It
I have the extreme pleasure to be able to coach all kinds of people at my job, and I do a lot of this kind of work outside of that as well. I love being able to help someone identify a challenge and move towards their goals, especially when the person is highly motivated and really just needs a little nudge here and there. I've seen a recurring theme, so it's time to write it down for us all.
We hold onto a lot of baggage. It seems so many of us (maybe all of us) have a hard time letting go of things.
Drop It
Philosopher Anthony Kiedis once said, "Complete the motion if you stumble." I don't know if that has a different source, but it's a really powerful.
Here's the idea. Let's say you had a bunch of money ten years ago, but something bad happened and you lost the money. For whatever reason, you spend quite a lot of time thinking about that. There's a whole lot of "if only" energy around it, probably some anger, resentment, whatever. Maybe throw some guilt on top.
None of that will help you go forward. Maybe you can scrape some lessons learned out of it all, but that's it. The challenge is that we have to let go. We have to drop our baggage. If your hands are full with baggage, how will they be open to catch what you need?

I've been using this other analogy that's similar. "You can't win a race with a big stick in your mouth." You can either hold onto the stick, or you can run your race. The idea is that if you focus on negative things, on the past, on what didn't work, you're not going to be free and clear to do the work that needs doing, to find the path going forward.
Instead, drop it. Work forward. Ask about what you need to get to where you're going next. Double check your'e going in the right direction. The gold is the goal. In other words, work towards your goal, and leave all other distractions behind in the mud. It's your path forward. You can succeed without having to carry around all that baggage or hold onto that too big stick.
At least that's what I'm coaching.
Chris...

2 年I Got more baggage following me than McCartney did on the Wings over America tour. I can NEVER drop it but have done is embrace it as part of what makes me who I am, not feel shame or guilt and actually now laugh at most of it...I did some really whack sh#t along the way.
