DroneTalks newsletter: how realistic are multi-drone use cases, why you should attend International Drone Show 2023, and more!

Hello?drone enthusiasts,

Our latest newsletter brings you some interesting drone industry news to help pass the hot summer days.

We’ll start by exploring the takeaways from a panel discussion on multi-drone use cases at Amsterdam Drone Week 2023, where experts explored the complexities of implementing multiple drone operations.

We'll also take a look at the upcoming International Drone Show 2023 in Odense, Denmark, where the vision for a future featuring drone operations and infrastructure will take centre stage. In addition to this, we’ve revisited a conversation with Maria Algar Ruiz, drone programme manager at EASA, to discuss how government agencies are harmonising certification efforts across different drone operations.

Next, we highlight an Aerial Cities panel discussion from Justin Steinke of Spright and Enda Walsh of the Irish Aviation Authority as they discuss the future prospects for drone companies in tomorrow's aerial cities. Finally, we look at the concept of robustness in drone safety, examining its two key components: integrity and assurance, which is fully explained by Lorenzo Murzilli in our Fundamentals of SORA online course.

Scaling drone operations with the application of multiple self-organised drones

How do we realistically approach multi-drone operations when it comes to public acceptance? How do the views of private industry differ from those of the regulators?

Check out the panel discussion from Amsterdam Drone Week 2023, where drone industry experts and regulators discuss the challenges of implementing multi-drone operations as well as which unlockers there are currently in terms of innovative technologies that can help empower the industry to take this critical step.

The panel was led by Stewart Marsh, who leads Cambridge Consultants’ aerospace activities, and he was joined by our CEO Eszter Kovács, Lori DeMatteis, Chief Growth Officer at MatrixSpace, Amanda Boekholt, Legal Advisor and Project Stakeholder Manager at the Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland and Chris Forster, Chief Operating Officer at Altitude Angel.

Top 5 reasons to attend International Drone Show 2023

“I foresee that in a few years’ time, you can take the light rail to Odense Station and from there take a flying taxi to Copenhagen or other Danish cities. Now is the time to start building a brand new infrastructure based initially on manned flying taxis that fly on green power and contribute to the government’s goal of achieving 100% green domestic transport by 2030” said HCA Airport Chairman Kim Kenlev in a recent interview with DroneLife.com.

Denmark and other Nordic countries have recently been pushing for more international organisations to join the Nordic drone industry ecosystem with special events like International Drone Show hosted by Odense Robotics happening in Odense, Denmark, on the 29th of August, 2023.

The event will be held at HCA Airport and includes speakers like Ulrik Max Nielsen, the founder of Plan2Fly, Arkadiusz ?urek, a research associate at the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding, Anders Martinsen the CEO of UAS Norway, Lars Korsholm, Head of Division at the Trafikstyrelsen and many many more!

What will it be like for future drone companies looking to start operating in the aerial cities of tomorrow?

We’ve invited Justin Steinke from Spright and Enda Walsh from the Irish Aviation Authority to speak about authorisations, enablers and roadblocks.

Justin is a well-known leader in the drone industry with a focus on the future of uncrewed flight and integration of unmanned systems into the national airspace system in his home country of the United States. He has over 20 years of aviation and leadership experience in multiple disciplines, including product development, sales and business development.

Enda is also a prominent leader in the drone industry but from the regulatory perspective in the UAS Division for the Irish Aviation Authority. He has worked in aviation for over a decade as an Airspace Regulator, Instrument Flight Procedure Designer and Military Air Traffic Controller.

He has a passion for drones and their potential for society, which is why his mission is to promote and regulate the industry to maximise competitive and socio-economic benefits while ensuring the highest level of safety, security, and protection for Ireland.

Robustness is a combination of two components: integrity and assurance.

Integrity is the safety gain from a risk mitigation strategy, like the limited effectiveness of a parachute on a large aircraft compared to a smaller one.

Assurance, on the other hand, is the validation of the claimed safety gain.

For instance, an operator might install a parachute and assume it works, or a third party could test and verify its functionality. While the mitigation measure (the parachute) remains the same, the proof of its effectiveness differs, showcasing the role of assurance.

These are just two of the many elements of the SORA process. Learn them all with our SORA Fundamentals course by Lorenzo Murzilli himself!
