Are Drones the Future of Outdoor Entertainment?
Last week The Los Angeles Philharmonic celebrated 100 years of its orchestra, the musicians and the children of Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. The only way to celebrate such a momentous time was with something revolutionary, something like 300 drones filling the Los Angeles night sky to perform a sound and light show. The show displayed the hundreds of drones perfectly convening and then dispersing again to create a visual experience of the orchestra’s century, forming into the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and finally spelling out YOLA and “LA Phil 100” above the guests in attendance.
While this was a first time experience for several of the guests, it is likely not going to be their last. Drone light shows are becoming the hottest method to make any event truly spectacular by telling a story in a whole new fashion. Drone performances have been showcased at the Super Bowl Halftime show, the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, at Art Basel, and even Universal Studios Hollywood’s “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter”.
These stories broadcast at festivals, movie premiers, sporting events, and unveilings could not be possible, however, without the use of specialized software that allows hundreds of light weight drones to be operated by a single skilled pilot. Months of planning, programming, and safety preparations go into each of these performances, resulting in some of the most rewarding displays, not only for the audience but for everyone involved in its creation as well.
Drones are the future, there’s no doubt about it. Drone light shows are just one aspect of drone technology and programming being put into practice. Drone technology is being utilized by the medical industry, shipping companies, art displays, agriculture and zoning; the list goes on and on. It’s vital for our children to get on board with this new wave of technology, innovation, art, mathematics, and the countless job opportunities that it offers. STEAM Drones has partnered with DroneBlocks to provide students across the country with the tools, guidance, and curriculum to excel in drone technology and programming from as young as kindergarten.
