Drones in a 5G World
The opinions expressed are solely my own and do not represent the views or opinions of my employer.
Flying magazine wrote an article about the FAA allowing UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) in September of 2023, link here and listed below, where drones can go beyond the VLOS (Visual Line of Sight). This is something that could be on a public network. However, public networks, even the major carriers, do go down. If they go down, then what?
Your drones have to be smart and know to return compared to when the self-driving cars shutdown and caused traffic jams in San Francisco back in August of 2023. The cars needed the connection to guide them. I feel this is a major mistake.
If you have a smartphone then you know when they lose connection to the network they tend to lock up.?
With a drone, you can’t work that way. The drones usually have brains in them to return to a starting point on their own, with or without the wireless connection.

8 个月Just like any technology drones get hyped by the Marketing machine by someone that really does not understand the technology. Drones are great both in the hobby and for business, surveillance and security. Using a drone to inspect a structure or tower or over where there is no line of site can save time and money. Hey drones are now used as kamikaze to destroy the enemy. As for using 5G or cellular we would have to include AI as there can be a certain amount of delay as many factors in the environment can cause an accident. The sky is the limit!

1 年I believe drones benefit many situations in the day to day and have came along way.. And continue to excel. Tests and factual research has proven so . As well as inspection reports on MOST structures ,facilities along with location verification on accidents ,obstructions root cause etc. But im old school . I'll always believe in field verification on items ,materials and troubleshooting with actual individual doing evaluations . That technology can not provide. Great read nevertheless Wade .
Go To Market Execution
1 年Great read Wade. I agree on the "what if" of Public Networks. The satellite space segment operators are looking at telemetry control as well. Hybrid adds resiliency.
