Drone operations: what practical support exists to help comply with regulations?
Referencing a collaborative project with FlyingBasket on behalf of EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme , Ján ?erňan, aviation consultant and project manager at Egis, confirmed that data from the European Earth Observation system Copernicus could give drone operators more confidence in the ground risk assessment process applicable to EASA’s 'specific' category. As part of efforts to make SORA evaluation more quantitative and uniform, drone operator FlyingBasket ran a demonstration flight using Copernicus data for the ground risk assessment.
This project successfully showed how harmonised and pan-European data from Copernicus could improve risk assessment of drone operations both within and across borders.?
?? Commenting on the situation in Slovakia, he says:?
“Unfortunately, Slovakia is the only EU country not to have adopted the main drone regulation yet. The most recent report of the Supreme Audit Office of the Slovak Republic (NKú) concludes that failing to adopt the regulation is presenting severe safety and security risks and will result in sanctions. Once adopted, (EU) 945/2019 and (EU) 947/2019 regulations will bring many changes impacting drone operators, the ANSP (LPS) and the Slovak CAA. It is vital to prepare for what is coming and to learn lessons from the recent pan-European initiatives. I hope my presentation was a starting point for such discussions and evidenced the technical and regulatory knowledge and experience we have that can assist the CAA and LPS with tackling the coming changes.”

Ján presented his findings at the Drontex conference ( Mam Dron ), which took place this Autumn in Pie??any, Slovak Republic. The event brought together drone users, the military, ANSPs, regulators, GUTMA, and many more industry players to discuss the use of unmanned technologies across V4 countries covering advanced use cases, safety, and security subjects.
