Driving sustainability forward, during Earth Month and beyond.

Driving sustainability forward, during Earth Month and beyond.

Earth Day might have been April 22, but for some FedEx team members whose day-to-day jobs revolve around the environment, prioritizing our planet is a part of their every-day job. In celebration of Earth Month 2024, we asked some of these team members questions about their roles and how their contributions help? FedEx? to deliver a more sustainable future.??

Can you describe your daily responsibilities and how they reflect a commitment to sustainability??

I have been with FedEx for 33 years and since starting in my current role in 2005, the City of Toronto has seen a 35% growth in population;?Toronto’s transportation infrastructure is not equipped to handle this rapidly increasing population. The downtown Toronto FedEx Express facility began a cargo e-bike pilot in 2020, launching three cargo bikes to help us mitigate the impact of rising traffic congestion.?This pilot proved to be a huge success and from the data the cargo e-bikes proved to be more cost effective, more productive, offered operational flexibility by navigating bike lanes, minimizing time spent on parking, avoiding congestion on narrow streets, and aligning with our goal of carbon neutral operations globally by 2040.??

Jeff Gilbert, Senior Operations Manager, Downtown Toronto?

As an e-bike courier for FedEx , my daily responsibilities include delivering packages while prioritizing sustainability. With the e-bike, I get to play a small role in helping to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner air. I'm proud to work for a company that is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and alleviating urban congestion by switching to electric vehicles. By using an e-bike over a traditional delivery vehicle, I’m doing my part to help cut down on carbon emissions and keep the air cleaner.?Plus, I get to chat with customers about sustainability. So, every delivery isn't just a drop-off—it’s a small step toward a greener future.??

Rikki-Katrina Brophy-Wiltshire, e-Bike Courier, Downtown Toronto?

Can you discuss the connection between your role and the environment??

I provide regulatory advice on a range of sustainability issues throughout our operations including aviation, sustainable fuels,?vehicle electrification, reporting, packaging, and traditional environmental compliance. This is an evolving field with an emerging regulatory framework, which pushes me to expand how I think about advocating for our sustainability objectives. Addressing climate change is critical and I like to think that I am doing my part, and I am fortunate because I can see the impacts of my work in real time. It is awesome when I see FedEx electric vehicles delivering a box that is recyclable. Days are challenging but rewarding!?

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I enjoy fostering collaboration across diverse departments and team members within our comprehensive network. Introducing the concept of sustainability to areas that have not previously considered its implications is particularly invigorating. It provides an opportunity to explain and demonstrate how each individual can actively contribute to our collective sustainability goals. My daily responsibilities encompass a spectrum of tasks, including the ongoing strategic development of solutions aligned with the overarching FedEx Logistics sustainability strategy and developing projects at the sweet spot where sustainability gains and business opportunities align. Sustainability can be a factor for growth and for good; it’s not zero sum.?

Benjamin Fogg, Global Sustainability Manager??

Making sustainable change requires both a long-term vision as well as the day-to-day engagement of different teams. As these stories show, helping to build a more sustainable future can take many forms. See more FedEx team member stories about sustainability on our YouTube.

I am sorry to share a recent BAD EXPERIENCE with FedEx's delivery service for an important humanitarian medical package for a child. That was delayed to leaving the sender area for two days. I called and was promised early delivery while on its way, but there was no hope. Even after I submitted a claim to pay back my charges, as I was told by the manager of the store. I am dealing with Robot, a "non-human" customer service company, and the issue has not been resolved. For God's sake, I need to talk to a human being. Thank you.CASE #C-147949155
