The conundrum we face is clear: How do we unlock our team's maximum potential while recognizing the intrinsic humanity within each team member?

The answer lies in embracing a new paradigm of leadership—one that seamlessly combines kindness and vulnerability with an unwavering commitment to excellence. Today's leaders must be multidimensional, capable of fostering high performance and sustainable success for their teams, businesses, industries, and the world. This multidimensionality requires us to grant ourselves the space and grace to be multifaceted leaders.

Here are a few strategies to set your team up for success as we embark on a new year. Further details of each strategy is outlined below.

  1. Connect the Dots: Aligning Organizational Mission with Individual Purpose
  2. Be Clear on Expectations: Connecting Team Goals with Individual Behaviour
  3. Results Through Relentless Execution: Working Smart and Staying Committed
  4. Put on Your Coach Hat: Openly Discussing Challenges and Strategies
  5. Protect Your Winning Time: Balancing Hard Work and Well-Being

1. Connect the Dots: Aligning Organizational Mission with Individual Purpose

Approach: Establish a top-down meets bottom-up connection by linking the broader mission of the organization to the role of each team and its members. Regularly revisit and discuss this connection as organizational dynamics evolve.

Key Questions:

  • How does our daily work impact customers, partners, investors, and the industry at large?
  • What makes us uniquely equipped to deliver on our promise to the world?
  • What can sustain us on challenging days, and what support do we need?
  • What essential knowledge must we acquire now to avoid regrets in the future?
  • What does the world look like when we achieve our mission?

2. Be Clear on Expectations: Connecting Team Goals with Individual Behaviour

Approach: Secure buy-in from teams by defining growth expectations in alignment with business goals. Employ a collaborative approach to strategize and determine operational metrics.

Leaders Perspective:

  • Growth Expectations: Define the growth expectations to achieve the organizational mission.

Team Perspective:

  1. Picture Success: Visualize success for the organization/team.
  2. Strategy: Collaboratively determine how to reach the defined targets.
  3. Operational Metrics: Establish clear OKRs or KPIs for transparent and consistent success measurement.

3. Results Through Relentless Execution: Working Smart and Staying Committed

Approach: Combine a clear strategy with dedicated execution to deliver on the organizational mission. Encourage smart work, commitment to winning, and incentivize team work.

Work Smart:

  • Prioritize revenue-generating actions and hold each other accountable.
  • Identify ways to deliver the highest level of performance long term with the least amount of effort.
  • Dedicate time blocks where everyone is laser focused on their individual revenue generating actions in a collective setting.

Stay Committed to Winning:

  • Embrace a "winning as a team" mindset.
  • Provide direct access to success scorecard data and use it as a basis for strategic discussion in one-to-one meetings.
  • Leverage CRM systems for tracking revenue-generating behaviour and pipeline discussions.

Incentivize Teamwork:

  • Use individual and team bonuses for incentivization, balancing individual and team performance.
  • Generate healthy competition and reward outstanding performance with Sales Leagues.
  • Praise in public and celebrate wins along the way. Be creative and have fun with it!

4. Put on Your Coach Hat: Openly Discussing Challenges and Strategies

Approach: Facilitate open discussions on challenges, opportunities, and strategies during weekly check-ins. Collaborate with employees to strategize for long-term success regardless of performance and aim to continually stretch their ability to exceed expectations.

Open Communication:

  • Establish open communication channels for vulnerability and growth.
  • Coach employees to unlock their potential by understanding motivations and barriers to success.

Become Sparring Partners:

  • Be clear you are on the same team even when you challenge one another.
  • Create individual game plans for accounts, understanding the underlying dynamics and triggers to win.

Performance Indicator:

  • View employee performance as an opportunity for additional support or upskilling.
  • Encourage employees to express their support needs, and budget for training and development.

5. Protect Your Winning Time: Balancing Hard Work and Well-Being

Approach: Inspire teams to drive each other to success while demonstrating the importance of balancing "on" and "off" hours.

Balancing "On" and "Off" Hours:

  • Set expectations for work and value-generating activities.
  • Clearly outline designated "off" times to prevent burnout.
  • Emphasize the importance of rest and recharge for sustained high performance.

In conclusion, embracing compassionate leadership and incorporating these strategies can help commercial leaders navigate the complexities of the modern work environment. By fostering a culture that values both individual well-being and unwavering commitment to business success, leaders can drive results that have a lasting impact on their teams and the world at large.

Thank you, Meghan! So many great and true points in this article! I'd add to no. 5 that the actual value-generating working time (aka time to really get things done and not spent in meetings) often needs protection as well.
