I have worked with many amazing #StartUps with amazing products. I have done so both as a full-time employee and as a consultant.
One of the fail points I have seen for many great products is undefined OKRs.
OKRs stands for Objectives and Key Results. As simple as it sounds and yet not, many start-ups don't have OKRs while others have insufficient ones.
During my time working at several start-ups, I have noticed a recurring trend in great OKRs for great products.
I have used the above to come up with a close-to-uniform OKR framework that every start-up could adopt.
Read along to see the framework I use:
Let's take an example for a start-up that has a product that enhances Online Learning.
- Align with Your Mission and Vision Objective: Align our product development with our mission to revolutionize online learning. Key Results: >> Achieve a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 40 or higher among our early adopters. >>Increase monthly active users (MAUs) by 20% by the end of the quarter. >>Launch a new feature that enhances the user experience for at least 75% of our users.
- Focus on Customer Value Objective: Deliver a product that provides exceptional value to our target customers. Key Results: >>Conduct user interviews with at least 20 customers to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement. >>Increase customer retention rate by 15% within the next three months. >>Achieve a customer satisfaction score (CSAT) of 85% or higher.
- Prioritize Key Features Objective: Develop and launch critical features that address user needs. Key Results: >>Complete the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for the course instructor's module within two sprints. >>Gather feedback from at least 50 users within the first week of launching feature Y. >>Achieve a 90% or higher adoption rate for feature Z among our target user segment.
- Iterate and Improve Objective: Continuously improve the product based on user feedback. Key Results: >>Implement updates based on at least 80% of the feedback received from user surveys and support tickets. >>Decrease the average response time to user feedback from 7 days to 48 hours. >>Increase the average app store rating from 4.0 to 4.5 within the next three months.
- Expand User Base Objective: Grow our user base and increase brand awareness. Key Results: >>Acquire 10,000 new users through organic channels (e.g., content marketing, social media) within the quarter. >>Secure partnerships with three influencers or industry leaders to promote our product. >>Achieve a 20% increase in website traffic and a 15% rise in social media followers.
- Optimize Conversion Funnel Objective: Improve the conversion rate from trial users to paid customers. Key Results: >>Increase the conversion rate from trial to paid accounts by 10%. >>Reduce the onboarding process completion time from 7 days to 3 days. >>Run A/B tests on the pricing page to increase the conversion rate by 5%.
- Financial Sustainability Objective: Achieve financial sustainability and profitability. Key Results: >>Achieve a positive gross margin by optimizing our cost structure. >>Increase monthly recurring revenue (MRR) by 20% over the next quarter. >>Secure at least three new enterprise-level clients to diversify revenue sources.
- Learning and Experimentation Objective: Foster a culture of continuous learning and experimentation. Key Results: >>Launch and analyze the results of three A/B tests on user interface improvements. >>Organize a monthly "Innovation Day" where each team member proposes and tests a new feature or idea. >>Complete at least two online courses or certifications related to product management within the next quarter.
Every Product, big or small should define its OKRs if they are to achieve growth. Remember that OKRs should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Regularly review and adjust them as your startup evolves, and be open to adapting your objectives and key results based on feedback and changing priorities.
