Driving Innovation and Learning as a Data Engineering Intern at GM Financial

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a Data Engineering Intern at GM Financial , where I embarked on an exciting journey to modernize our existing data framework. The primary project was to transition our dependency jobs framework from Oracle/Information to Databricks on Azure Cloud using Python and SQL.

Throughout this internship, I gained hands-on experience in cutting-edge data engineering tools and cloud technologies. Working on Databricks allowed me to explore its capabilities in handling large datasets and executing complex data pipelines. I honed my Python and SQL skills, learning how to integrate them effectively within the Databricks environment.

One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated team of data engineers and analysts. The collaborative environment fostered learning and growth, as I was able to exchange ideas and best practices with seasoned professionals. Additionally, I had the chance to meet an alum from Naveen Jindal School of Management, UT Dallas , who enriched my internship experience. Their insights into the industry and career advice were invaluable, providing me with a broader perspective on my future career path.

An important lesson I learned during this internship is the significance of adaptability and continuous learning. Modernization from Oracle to Databricks presented challenges, but it also taught me the importance of embracing new technologies and being open to change. This experience reinforced the value of staying current with industry trends and continually expanding my skill set.

Overall, my internship at GM Financial was a rewarding and transformative experience. It not only enhanced my technical skills but also provided me with a deeper understanding of the practical applications of data engineering in a corporate setting. I am privileged to work with one of the most supportive managers, Karthick and Sara.
