Driving Home is Where the Heart is.

I went on a road trip recently, with the former CEO of BestBuy, Hubert Joly. Well, when I say ‘with’ him, he didn’t actually know about our shared journey from one end of Ireland to the other, because he wasn’t there. But his words and wisdom were, by way of his book ‘The Heart of Business’, which I had on audio. At points, I laughed as I drove. I even cried (seriously… that was a first for a book about corporate culture!), and I was sad when the long drive ended.?

I first encountered this charming and sage presence at the recent WBECS pre-summit event. And I have to confess, when the talk opened, I wondered if I was in the right room. After all, I don’t have a particular interest in big business. I may even have a mild resistance to it, if anything. But as he started to speak, I knew that what he had to say was not just relevant to corporate work or those straddling many countries. His ‘refoundation of capitalism’ is in fact what I see in so many small businesses and solopreneur efforts, as they strive to ‘be the change’.?

What he shares in his book isn’t just a set of recollections, or even instructions. It’s a warm and wise nudge in the direction of a more sustainable economy.?

This book has sailed through every stage of my multilevel assessment of books, and after our delightful drive, it has earned a place in my Paperback Pantheon. If you want to know what successful business can be - how it can look and feel when it acknowledges and integrates the heart, rather than leading purely with the head -? then I’d strongly recommend this book to you.
