?? Driving the Future: Lessons from an Electric Car
After over 40 years behind the wheel, I've recently found a vehicle that stands out as the fastest, most comfortable, and cheapest to run of all those I've owned and there have been many. Is my EV the future of driving? Who knows. But one thing's for sure: it's a brilliant piece of technology, a testament to progress, much like many advancements we've witnessed over the last century.
So, why is this step forward a lesson for everyone in business today and what can we learn from yesterday?
Embracing Change
Remember when BlackBerry was the king of mobile phones? They dominated the market, but then along came Apple with iPhone, redefining what a smartphone could be. Businesses thrive when they embrace change, just like the automotive industry with electric vehicles. The companies that adapt and invent or integrate new technologies are the ones that lead the pack.
Efficiency is Key
Electric cars exemplify efficiency – charge at home, lower running costs, fewer maintenance issues, and a sensational driving experience. Similarly, businesses that streamline operations and remove unnecessary costs will be ahead of the competition. Just like Apple streamlined the user experience, making it more intuitive and efficient than BlackBerry.
Sustainability Matters
Just as electric cars represent a move towards sustainable driving, businesses must consider their environmental impact. Sustainable practices benefit the planet and attract customers who value corporate responsibility. Apple’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint is a prime example of how sustainability can enhance a brand's reputation.

Customer-Centric Innovations
Electric vehicles are designed with the user in mind, arguably led by Tesla who redefined the car with technology and design unlike anyone else before them, focusing on simplicity with comfort and performance.
In business, understanding and prioritising customer needs leads to better products, services, and overall satisfaction. Apple rethought the smartphone and succeeded where BlackBerry failed, by understanding what customers wanted before they even realised it themselves. Apple also rethought the value of the hardware and redefined sales channels, all against the tide that was the mobile phone industry. Is the EV market going the same way?
Future-Proofing
While we can't predict the future, as business owners and leaders we can prepare for it. Investing in new technologies and staying ahead of trends ensures businesses remain relevant and competitive. BlackBerry’s downfall was due to its failure to innovate and foresee the shift towards touchscreens and app ecosystems, whereas Apple stayed ahead by continuously innovating.
So, whether it's driving a cutting-edge car or running a business, the message is clear: embrace innovation, strive for efficiency, prioritise sustainability, and always keep the customer at the heart of your decisions.
