In Paris, leaders and innovators convened at Huawei Connect 2024 and Huawei Innovation Day 2024, tackling Europe’s digital challenges and opportunities. The event delivered a unified message: Europe’s digital and sustainable leadership depends on collaboration, innovation, and collective responsibility.?
Across keynotes, panels, and even live debates streamed on Euronews’ YouTube channel by presenter Naomi Lloyd, the discussions demonstrated how partnerships and purpose can shape industries and create a more sustainable future. As an audience, it struck me how much of Europe’s potential lies in the hands of those willing to take bold, cooperative steps.
A Call for Collaboration
The Huawei Innovation Day session opened with an essential reminder from Jesus Contreras of EIT Digital: “Innovation is never a solo endeavor.” His words highlighted the critical need for collective action to address Europe’s fragmented regulations, uneven 5G deployment, and digital skills gap. These daunting challenges, rather than being roadblocks, were framed as opportunities for strategic partnerships to drive progress.
Nicola Caputo of the European Committee of the Regions reinforced this message, urging governments and enterprises to pool their resources and work together to achieve Europe’s Digital Decade 2030 targets. His emphasis on cross-border cooperation underscored a vital truth: the complexity of these issues demands unity and shared responsibility.
Listening to these leaders, it struck me that Europe’s greatest strength lies in its diversity. Collaboration isn’t just an option, it’s essential in a world where challenges transcend borders and industries. Europe’s ability to align its many perspectives and leverage its unique strengths could turn obstacles into opportunities for innovation and growth. These insights left me reflecting on how partnerships rooted in trust and shared purpose hold the key to unlocking Europe’s full potential.
Driving Transformation Across Industries
This took me back to the keynote earlier in the morning, where leaders emphasized the importance of partnerships in addressing Europe’s digital challenges. It was one thing to talk about collaboration in theory, but seeing its tangible results in action brought the message to life. Industry leaders shared compelling examples of how Huawei’s technology is reshaping their sectors, demonstrating the real-world impact of strategic alliances.
Eric Bazin of Orange Business reflected on a 12-year partnership with Huawei that has delivered innovative, sustainable digital infrastructure. Together, they’ve deployed green energy-powered data centers, Wi-Fi networks for smart retail, and recycling initiatives. Their work illustrated how sustainability and operational efficiency can go hand in hand, an approach that feels as relevant to small businesses as it does to global enterprises.
Frank Lal, CIO of LVMH, shared how Huawei’s connectivity solutions optimize operations across the luxury group’s store network in China. LVMH’s “China for China” strategy ensures local compliance while enhancing supply chain agility and delivering personalized customer experiences. Lal’s insights underscored how technology enables global brands to tailor their strategies locally, a fascinating example of blending innovation with heritage.
Meanwhile, Dan Bin, CTO of Arian, showcased the agility Huawei Cloud provides in the advertising sector. By reducing latency by 20% during peak campaigns, Arian gained the ability to adapt to real-time market demands. As I listened to his story, I realized that the difference between thriving and struggling in today’s markets often comes down to milliseconds and data-driven decisions.

Supporting Emerging Innovators
Coming back to Innovation Day, it was great to see how Huawei is empowering not just established giants but also grassroots innovators. Yu Liang, Vice President of Huawei Cloud Global Ecosystem, announced a sustainability-focused incubation program in partnership with Station F, the world’s largest startup campus. This program, designed to support startups in retail, manufacturing, and automotive, aims to embed sustainability into their core while helping them scale. It was a stark reminder that innovation often starts small, and nurturing these ideas is essential for creating long-term impact.
Inclusivity also took center stage during a panel led by Huawei Europe’s Berta Herrero. Women entrepreneurs shared how diversity drives innovation and economic growth. Their stories underscored a critical truth: Europe’s digital transformation must reflect the diversity of its population.?
Hearing these perspectives, I couldn’t help but think that empowering underrepresented voices isn’t just about fairness, it’s about unleashing untapped potential to drive more inclusive and dynamic innovation. It left me reflecting on how diversity isn’t just a value to champion; it’s a competitive advantage for any forward-thinking ecosystem.
Sustainability as a Core Pillar
Sustainability emerged as a unifying thread throughout the event, resonating deeply with me. Laurent Lafforgue, a mathematician collaborating with Huawei, highlighted how foundational research in AI and mathematics at Huawei’s Paris Research Center supports practical innovations like AI-driven climate forecasting and 5G-enabled smart farming. These are more than just impressive technological feats, they’re tools addressing real-world environmental challenges that increasingly demand our attention.
Sustainability isn’t just a checkbox, it’s a necessity, and it’s personal. We’ve all experienced the effects of climate change in some way, whether through unpredictable weather patterns or the increasing strain on global resources. Listening to these stories, I couldn’t help but reflect on how thoughtful integration of sustainability not only drives innovation but ensures that progress benefits future generations. It’s clear: growth without sustainability isn’t growth at all, it’s a missed opportunity to lead responsibly.
A Shared Responsibility
Closing the event, Tony Yong Jin, Huawei’s Director of Business Environment Affairs, framed the challenge ahead succinctly: “Digital innovation is not just a promise — it’s a responsibility.” His call to action emphasized the need for a unified commitment across governments, enterprises, and startups to drive Europe’s transformation.?
This led me to think how responsibility in this context goes beyond any single organization, it’s a collective mission to shape a better future. The discussions throughout the summit reinforced this idea.?
Connecting for a Brighter Future
The day painted a compelling vision: Europe’s future lies in collaboration, inclusivity, and sustainability. From optimizing luxury supply chains to empowering startups, the event highlighted the practical ways in which technology can address diverse challenges.
Sitting through the sessions, one takeaway stood out: Europe’s path to leadership isn’t about competing with others but about leveraging its unique strengths — its diversity, its innovation, and its commitment to sustainability. When these elements come together through partnerships, the results are transformative. The stories shared in Paris demonstrated that the future is within reach, as long as the right connections are forged.
