The UAE government, indeed the region has a strong commitment to climate change and a sustainable future as we reported?here. This week, MOCCAE took it one step further and introduced the?National Air Quality Agenda 2031. Approved by the UAE Cabinet in June 2022, the Agenda provides a general framework to lead and align federal and local government entities and the private sector in regard to monitoring and effectively managing air quality and reducing air pollution to contribute to a healthy and safe environment.
At a time when the UAE is set to host COP28 in 2023 and reinforcing its commitment towards achieving net-zero by 2050,?Hub71 signed a partnership?with Siemens Energy to advance Cleantech and Climatetech. As part of the agreement, the two aim to identify prominent startups to explore investment opportunities that have the potential to accelerate the clean energy transition.
The World Economic Forum estimates that 15 percent of global emissions can be reduced, and even up to 20 percent in the high-emitting sectors. At a time when the topic of climate change is gaining more and more importance, a?new report?from the AI for the Planet Alliance, produced in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group and BCG GAMMA, reveals that 87 percent of public and private sector leaders who oversee climate and AI topics believe that AI is a valuable asset in the fight against climate change.
Accelerated by the increasing threat of climate change, interest in electric mobility has escalated over the last four years, both within companies and across societies, according to the?findings of a new study?conducted by Arthur D. Little. The Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index finds that there has been a massive jump in EV adoption worldwide. Governments across the Middle East region are accelerating development of EV technology with Saudi Arabia’s pledge to become carbon neutral by 2060 and have 30 percent of vehicles in Riyadh electric by 2030. The UAE, with an aim to become carbon neutral by 2050, ranks 8th globally in terms of readiness for electric mobility.

To finish with another startup story to look at sustainable futures, TiE Dubai announced the winners from its regional?MENA TiE Women?pitch competitions. The five MENA winners will join 34 others from around the globe to compete for the US$100,000 equity-free cash prize. The winners, selected over five regional finals, were picked from a pool of 200+ applications from women-led businesses from 15 countries across five regions (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Levant and Rest of the MENA).
According to Boston Consulting Group (BCG), if women and men participated equally as entrepreneurs, global GDP could rise by approximately 3 to 6 percent, boosting the global economy by $2.5 trillion to $5 trillion.
