Do you find yourself stuck in the bubble of internal metrics, KPIs, and obsessing over internal goals? We all need a reminder that with changing customer needs and new competitors, this inward focus won’t cut it.

As CEO and Group CCO, driving commercial mindset for the organisation is my priority. Breaking free from these internal echo chambers and helping teams reconnect with the market is the only way we can strive to deliver value for our customers.

A few lessons:

Prioritise market insights over internal metrics—KPIs matter, but market trends, customer pain points, competitive shifts and digital enablement should drive your strategy.

Redefine success through your customers' eyes. Are you solving real problems and staying relevant?

Encourage teams to look beyond your company's walls. Reward fresh market insights and challenges to internal assumptions.

Break down silos. A commercial mindset thrives on cross-functional collaboration to solve customer problems, not just hit internal targets. Foster organisational thinking and reward this behaviour.

Strategy shouldn’t stand still. Review and adjust based on external realities, not internal comfort. Build your strategies to stay relevant to your customers.
