How This Driver Makes $30/H With Uber
Have you been thinking it’s impossible to make decent money from Uber lately?
Has the hustle and the industry just got you down?
Well, FloppyDX is a driver consistently grossing $30 per hour with Uber as his side hustle. He shared his details on Reddit. Keep reading for his tips, tricks and stats.
Driver Stats
FloppyDX claims to have a 60% acceptance rate, and he’s been driving for Uber for 3 years and 7 months. His average earnings are $1.40/mile. This is in the San Francisco market, driving a Tesla Model 3 Performance.
Below is a breakdown of his earnings for the week of January 27 to February 3, 2025.

Even without counting the promotions and tips, he’s averaging $24/hr!
As some people in the comments point out, the cost of living in SF is higher than in other places, so that’s something to consider. FloppyDX responded, saying that’s true, which is why Uber is just supplemental pay. It’s not his full-time gig.
FloppyDX commits to driving about 3 to 4 hours per day and hustling hard on the weekends, though he doesn’t drive weekend nights. He admits that working weekend nights could significantly increase his earnings, but currently, he tends to focus on end-of-day commuter hours, which are 4 to 7 pm.
The max he’ll work on weekend days is 7 hours each day. He says his system is to do quick math and only accept rides that add up to him. His calculations look like this:
10 minutes or less = $5
15 minutes or less = $7.50
20 minutes or less = $10
This way, he’s more likely to earn his goal of $30/hr. Furthermore, he tries to stay under 5 minutes for the pickup time, but occasionally, he’ll do a 10-minute pickup if it’s going to put him where he wants to be.
On average, his trips consist of 95% Green/X and 5% Comfort.
Tips for Drivers
FloppyDX advises drivers to keep their cars clean.
He personally never engages in conversation aside from a quick hello to the riders, gives them an ETA to their destination and asks them about the temperature inside the vehicle so he can adjust to their preference. And the final piece is that he always helps with their luggage.
One commenter said that drivers should talk a lot instead of keeping things simple and quiet. That driver claims to have an 80% tip rate and thinks it’s mostly because of a steady stream of conversation with the riders.
Personally, I just read the room. Some people are up for conversation, and others prefer not to talk a lot. Recently, I took an Uber with a friend, and she and I talked a lot. I could see the driver was listening in based on his reactions to what we were saying, but he kept his opinions to himself, which was great for us.
We didn’t want him to participate in the conversation since she and I were just catching up with each other. If he had popped into the conversation, it would have taken away from our moment together.
As FloppyDX says, as a driver, don’t start the conversation, but if a rider shows interest in talking with you, participate in the conversation.
EV Costs
Since he’s driving a Tesla Model 3 Performance, the expenses aren’t the same for an electric vehicle as for a gas-powered vehicle. For the week shown above, he drove a total of 743 miles and spent $94.54 on electricity using superchargers during peak hours.
There is an EV incentive he works toward every week as well. Though, to his point, you never know when the incentive will go away, so he doesn’t rely on it always being there.
Final Thoughts
Every market is different, of course. And being a full-time driver isn’t a guarantee to pay the bills. But, if you want to earn some serious side money to supplement your regular income, driving Uber part-time can be lucrative.
You just have to learn your market, drive when you’re guaranteed rides and be a little picky about the requests you accept.
For everyone thinking this is just a one-off or that he got lucky with this week that he posted, follow his Reddit account. He posts weekly and has 3 weeks’ worth of earnings so far, all showing $30/hr averages.
