Will Driver CPC be scrapped with Brexit?

With the UK government experiencing some turmoil. The General Election is now scheduled for early December. Brexit seems to have had the can kicked down the road for like, well forever! But since 2016 the words on many drivers’ lips is ‘What about Driver CPC?’

Driver CPC continues to polarise opinion in the transport sector. Many drivers had hoped the Conservative government along with delivering Brexit, would also be able to scrap CPC by the September 2019 deadline, therefore leaving their training until the last minute. Even UKIP were touting the Driver vote by promising to abolish CPC.

So what’s going to happen?

It looks like Driver CPC will be accepted into UK law when Brexit (if and) when finally happens. There will be some changes of course for International Standard Operators and Drivers documents for Europe. How that looks, is yet to be fully understood. However, it seems Driver CPC and Periodic Driver CPC Training is here to stay.

How can it be made better?

Driver CPC can be very frustrating, especially when the training is poor. Regular complaints people have mentioned to us is the training could be poorly delivered. Poor training content, material and resources. Poor trainers with little industry knowledge or experience. Repetitive course content, or sitting the same course multiple times. One of our frustrations is a driver can qualify by sitting the same course five times. Therefore, there is loads of things can be done to improve Driver CPC.

7 Simple Steps to improving Driver CPC.

  1. 5 different courses should be sat in the 5 year period.
  2. Where possible Drivers should sit 1 course per year (to prevent cramming at the last minute).
  3. Courses should stretch Drivers, encouraging them to learn new skills.
  4. Rogue Trainers should be called out and banned.
  5. Qualified Trainers who understand training delivery and how best to deliver quality and engaging training sessions should be used by all centres.
  6. Reduce the 7 hour day. (A 7 hour day is too long if only delivered in a classroom. To encourage participation the number of hours should be reduced or consider being split into shorter days. For example; Emergency First Aid at Work is only a 6 hour course usually)
  7. Consider Driver CPC as an opportunity for investment and Professional Development.

Driver CPC as an Investment and Professional Development Strategy

Too often Driver CPC is driven on price only. We always see, ‘Where’s the cheapest place to get my CPC?’ Or the opening question from Drivers is ‘How much are your courses?’

Few companies and drivers are asking, ‘What’s the return on investment?’ or ‘How is this going to develop my Driving team?’ ‘How are we going to improve our business performance by investing in this?’ ‘What value can you add to my business?’

These are the questions transport companies should really be asking.

Some excellent points. I 100% agree with the teaching side. Trainers should have a PTLLS as minimum.! If you read the information about training on the Home Office site, that word ‘should’ is replaced with ‘MUST’. Subject matter knowledge...absolutely! Be it vocational hands on or certified. Price...this is where we see a drop in quality. My only thought on the same module more than once is this. I believe it could serve as knowledge reinforcement if a company for example, are getting penalised on drivers hours. However, when the same module is done 5 times in the same week...not good!! All the courses I have run/running, are focused on the needs of the learner. What I do 100% disagree with, is the 7 hours. It’s too long and distracts from learning. It therefore becomes a negative before you’ve even started to win the group around. ??
