Driver CPC and the Driver Qualification Card
As we approach the traditional busy period for the renewal of Driver Qualification Cards and therefore the CPC training rush, why is it that so many drivers are not prepared this time? We certainly aren’t seeing the same demand this time.
The 9th September 2024 sees the third full five-year cycle for training since the introduction of the Driver Qualification Cards for HGV drivers in 2009. Each time we approach the five-year anniversary, we get a rush from drivers that need to get hours in so they maintain their legal status to driver commercial vehicles professionally. This time we have not see the usual numbers but why is this?
As time goes by, we have new drivers coming into the industry so they will have different expiry dates. This would account for a small amount of smoothing of volume. Many companies that used to offer CPC courses ‘in-house’ have now stopped and choose to sub-contract the service or ask that drivers make their own arrangements. This means we could have many drivers that are leaving it a little too late.
What is noticeable in the training industry is the amount of CPC training being delivered by very large businesses now. People are attracted to the cheap rates and the convenience of online training. In my experience the large companies offer varied standards of courses and all too often I hear anecdotes of CPC tutors that are unable to answer fundamental questions of have been distributing misinformation. The large volume of numbers does not mean a quality course and some experienced freelance trainers have now ceased to operate.

Always be careful where you send drivers and ensure that you have good quality training. Some online courses are convenient but online training has it’s limits and does not suit some delegates. A good quality training course may just stop an accident, mitigate liability or improve efficiency.
