Weekly Talent Insight: Snowflake Vs Databricks

This week is brought to you by Natalia Kurasinski

It’s an important decision, what platform to use, Snowflake or Databricks.??

This comes up in my conversation on a daily basis with the Data & Analytics community.

Which platform is more powerful and what will help with their data needs?

In my opinion, it’s very important to understand the mission of your organization before choosing which path to go down.

There are 5 key areas to think about when making these decisions which include:?

? Use Case

? Scalability?

? Pricing?

? Integration?

? Data Governance?

Now, both most certainly have the upper hand in different areas. Snowflake has built-in data governance features and the ability to handle extremely large data sets. On the other hand, Databricks has different needs where it is best suited for real-time data processing and machine learning.?

I recently published a Poll on LinkedIn to find out what my network chooses or would like to operate when starting a new role with a business.?

The result:

Snowflake – 71%?

Databricks – 29%?

The insight that I received from this, is that Snowflake is cost-effective, easy to manage, and over time, it is easy to maintain. I was also told Snowflake has the opportunity to handle your data in a more traditional sense.?

But what about Databricks??

Is it fair to compare both these platforms and what comes after both of these?

Will there be a new data platform in the next 5 years for us all to rave about?

All questions I'm keen to dive into further in the future.

That is everything for this week, now to your favourite segment... Our weekly data joke!

Why do data engineers prefer dogs to cats?

Because dogs are better at fetching data!

Thanks!
