To reduce carbon emissions, enhance animal welfare, and advance environmentally friendly practices throughout the UK dairy industry, Tesco has launched a new partnership with dairy suppliers Arla and Müller UK & Ireland. The alliance, which seeks to reduce on-farm emissions by 30% by 2030, is a major industry effort to address the effects of climate change on dairy farming.
To?build a more robust dairy supply chain, the Future Dairy Partnership unites 400 farmers from Tesco's Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) and invites involvement from other industry participants. Tesco's long-standing dedication to sustainable agriculture is shown in this endeavor, which builds on the achievements of earlier programs with its TSDG farmers that aimed to lessen environmental effects, such as?the introduction of feed additives that reduce methane.
"To achieve revolutionary changes, we need to collaborate as a sector," stated Ashwin Prasad, chief commercial officer of Tesco. "We're making sure that farmers are at the forefront of achieving our common climate and environmental objectives by collaborating with Arla and Müller."
Farmers will have a significant influence on the Future Dairy Partnership's roadmap by supporting initiatives that investigate natural carbon reduction strategies and innovative animal welfare practices. A new Sustainable Dairy Blueprint, which will provide precise criteria on sustainability targets while giving farmers and processors the freedom to select practices that best fit their operations, will serve as the framework for the partnership's objectives.
The TSDG is co-chaired by Arla farmer Will Hosford and Müller farmer Dave Jones. The alliance will enable farmers to exchange best practices and promote a cooperative approach to sustainable dairy farming, they said, underscoring the significance of stewardship. We want to leave our farms in a better state for the next generation because we are farmers. We can ensure a more sustainable future for dairy with our alliance," they stated.
Some of the main areas of focus include a specialized farmer focus group to evaluate carbon-reducing technology, innovation through on-farm initiatives, an industry-wide report to offer insights into sustainable practices, and the funding required to propel advancement.
