To drive into the sunset, you'll first have to endure the glare!

I shared a conversation with four friends who drove from Atlanta to the Porsche Rennsport Reunion near San Francisco. They shared an amazing video (posted separately) taken on the James Dean Highway of two Porsches driving into the sunset – a breathtaking moment! As we were talking, they added that the minutes before the sunset were painful – driving directly toward the sun’s blinding glare. That image struck me as a picture of so much that we struggle to handle!
Pause to consider your painful penultimate minutes. The situation that seems unbearable- The problem you can’t see past- That circumstance so painful that it blinds you to everything else- - How can we see beyond the unrelenting glare of life?
Eyes forward – hands steady on the wheel – foot on the gas – Drive straight through it!
Then – and only then – a moment of beauty can eclipse what came before. In this case, trademark Porsche curves contrast with infinite lines on the road in a picturesque sunset that fills the horizon. The glow on the hood; the motion of the wheels. Simply stunning.
Too often we consider these moments in isolation – disconnected from what came before. We forget that in order to get to the sunset, the drivers had to endure hours of travel and long minutes of obscured visibility. The moment is worth the innumerable minutes it takes to get there.
If you find yourself blinded by the harsh glare of a situation that seems insurmountable, whatever you do, don't stop the car. Keep driving and be ready. Your moment may be just around the next curve.
