Drive out future fear

Drive out future fear

We live in the Age of Outrage. People are fearful of the future. They think the game is rigged. Tribal warfare rages.

"People are angry with the world—in some cases, rightfully so—and now view companies as they do governments, as targets of their wrath and potential forces for social change. Managing outrage has moved from being an occasional leadership challenge, like handling a PR crisis, to a necessary and critical leadership capability, like strategic thinking or financial acumen."

Here are some survival tips.

How can you drive out fear of the future?

  1. Listen to other people
  2. Create meaningful relationships
  3. Build trust
  4. Help people create their own future
  5. Shine a light on misinformation
  6. Increase the value of your expertise
  7. Mitigate technofatique
  8. Support healthy techno skepticism
  9. Slow down
  10. Shift from Type 1 to Type 2 thinking
  11. The rising tide does not presently lift all boats. Help people find the right dock so it lifts theirs
  12. Put things in perspective and take the long view
  13. Future proof your career
  14. Learn to see around corners
  15. Use probabilistic scenario planning to make better decisions

Poker champion turned business consultant Annie Duke teaches you how to get comfortable with uncertainty and make better decisions as a result.

She notes that even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time. There's always an element of luck that you can't control, and there is always information that is hidden from view. So the key to long-term success (and avoiding worrying yourself to death) is to think in bets: How sure am I? What are the possible ways things could turn out? What decision has the highest odds of success? Did I land in the unlucky 10% on the strategy that works 90% of the time? Or is my success attributable to dumb luck rather than great decision making?

Don't underestimate the value of luck and stop fearing things over which you have no control.
