Drive Will Get You to Your Life's Destination

Drive Will Get You to Your Life's Destination

Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success. Explorer Ernest Shackleton (in a 1890 ad for the first Antarctic expedition).

If the above were a current help wanted advertisement, would you apply for this job? If your answer is "YES," perhaps you are ripe for challenge and driven to succeed.

Drive is an inner quality that many people lack. It is drive that makes a person not wish to accept the status quo. It is drive that makes someone not want to be mediocre. It is drive that propels most successful people towards achievement. Being driven requires the following conditions exist:

  • The strength of certain needs. You are on a tight deadline to complete an assignment by noon and find yourself in the mood for a burger and fries. If you are starving you will eat. If you are slightly hungry you will finish the task at hand, FIRST and then eat.
  • The perception that taking a certain action will help satisfy those needs. In the prior example, you demonstrated two burning needs — you wish to fulfil your obligation and complete the assigned task on time. But, you also want that burger and fries. And you want them now! How you weigh these two choices will determine which one takes priority. If you are driven to succeed, you will likely put off lunch and meet your deadline. If you put your personal craving first, then you will probably put burger over big win.

Many people we know are happily content with their current position in life and career. That is just fine. It's their choice. Others want more for themselves and their loved ones. They are determined to attain higher goals and earn recognition and rewards for doing so. It is drive that gives us the push to go get what we want, rather than to just sit back and hope things will come our way, organically. Often, they never do.

We know that life is a journey with many detours and roadblocks along the way. No matter what your journey is, you will never reach your desired destination without drive to navigate around unforeseen obstacles and pitfalls...WITHOUT EVER GIVING UP!
