DRIP and FERTIGATION in SUGARCANE CULTIVATION
RAMU THAMPALAYAGOWDER
Assistant Director of Agriculture at Department of Agriculture , Government of Tamilnadu , South India
In sugar cane cultivation sub surface drip system plays a vital role in 100 % water use efficiency and checking weeds growth
6000 single budded sugarcane sett are used to cover one acre field .
Yield parameters
No of single budded sett - 6000
No of sprouts/ Branches - 24 / set in an average
Total numbers of branches per acre - 6000 Setts * 24 sprouts = 1,44,000
Mortality -20 % of 1,44,000 = 28,800 ( 40 % mortality in conventional sugarcane cultivation
Viable nos of cane per acre = 1,15,200 canes
Out of 1,15,200 canes 35 % are mother canes/ Primary shoots with single cane weight of 1.15 kgs ( 40320 shoots * 1.15 kgs = 46368 kgs yield )
40 % of 1,15200 canes are secondary shoots with single cane weight of 0.70 kgs ( 46080 * 0.70=32256 kgs yield )
Remaining 25% were tertiary shoots with single cane weight of 0.30 Kgs ( 28800 * 0.30 kg=8640 kgs )
Total weight of the canes/ yield per acre is 46368 +32256+8640 = 87264 kgs ( 87 MT per acre )
To achieve this yield water soluble fertilizers should be applied through fertigation system so as to obtain uniform and steady growth .
