Drilling for a Sustainable Future

Drilling for a Sustainable Future

The story continues! In week 44, we began drilling for geothermal heating. Initially, we estimated 15 boreholes would be enough, but as we reached approximately 200 meters deep, we encountered exceptionally hard rock. This prompted a quick decision to drill five additional holes to ensure we could maximize the system's efficiency in the long run. This also gives us the flexibility to expand the hydronic heating system throughout the building in the future, should we choose to.

Previously, the entire property was heated with direct electric heating—a solution that was neither economical nor sustainable. With the investment in this new, efficient energy source, about 80% of the property will soon be heated by geothermal energy. And here’s a bonus: in the summer, we’ll use the natural cooling from the boreholes to create a comfortable indoor environment during even the hottest days.

This initiative is part of our broader ambition to create a self-sufficient property, complementing the solar panel system we installed last winter.
