Drift, Coast or Panic

Before I begin, let me paint a picture of what I see a lot of small business owners do when it comes to their sales strategy (if you can call it that).

They seem to do one of three things; drift, coast or panic when it comes to their?selling approach - have a read and let me know where you think you currently fit.?

Drifting Sales Strategy;?

These business?owners wait and see what happens. Work comes in, just enough to keep them afloat but nothing much changes month on month,?it's not that exciting but 'it will do for now'. There is a feeling that they 'could be doing more'. They avoid 'selling' as it makes them feel pushy and uncomfortable so they're at the beck and call of whoever needs them next and end up doing 'unaligned' and unfulfilling work. In any case, it's not very rewarding - but it's 'OK'.

Coasting Sales Strategy;?

Coasting is not that different from the above as this is actually quite a comfortable space and business can stay here for years. They don't push forward and they're not very proactive in their approach - confidence may be holding them back just that little bit. However, their reputation keeps the work coming in and they build their business without much direction. The sales are made and business coasts on. It feels effortless and 'good enough'. There is however a perpetual question mark and these questions come up every few months;?

  • What more could I achieve??
  • Could my business make more impact if I was a bit more proactive?
  • But, where do I begin?

Panic Mode;?

This is the?least comfortable sales strategy and where new businesses often start and fail.

With each new month comes a new challenge. How will they hit the mounting sales targets? What should they even be selling? Confusion rains here and progress is non-existent. It's a downwards spiral?as with each missed sale confidence plummets.

The months feel unstructured, unfulfilling and the?business owner feels vulnerable, lost and so very alone. They may have some tools to deploy which brings in the sales but this is random at best.

Sales are sporadic and servces are often sold below market rate. Catch 22 lives here; these businesses desperately need help but don't have the capital to get the help they need.?This?short-sighted approach to investing in their growth hurts their businesses long term.?
