Dried fruits – the perfect accompaniment to cheese.

Dried fruits – the perfect accompaniment to cheese.

A few months ago, we wrote a short report about the flavour combinations of nuts and cheese. Our readers’ response was very gratifying, so we did some more research and produced a new report: “Dried fruits – the perfect accompaniment to cheese.”

Not only nuts but also dried fruits are excellent with cheese and have a positive influence on its aroma. But which dried fruit goes well with which cheese?

Powerful blue cheeses such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort need particularly sweet dried fruits such as dates for a harmonious pairing. They preserve and bring out the bittersweet flavour this type of cheese.

Dates are also best for pairing with a creamy, mild cream cheese – especially one made from goat's milk – but dried figs and plums also produce a balanced aroma.?

Dried apricots paired with medium-strong, creamy soft cheeses such as Camembert and Brie are a classic combination. The soft, melting texture of the cheese and its slightly bitter mould rind call for a combination of freshness and creamy, fruity sweetness.

Dried apricots and cranberries also go wonderfully with the typical caramel flavour of mature hard cheeses such as alpine cheeses or Emmental. The fine sweetness and elastic texture of the dried fruit achieve a harmonious taste sensation when combined with the strong cheese.

Have fun preparing your next cheese platter!
