What Your Space Says About You (Even If You Didn’t Mean It To)
Your space is always talking. Whether it’s whispering elegance, shouting chaos, or mumbling something about an unfinished IKEA project, the way you arrange your surroundings is a form of communication. And in the age of Zoom calls and Instagram stories, people are constantly getting a snapshot of who you are based on what’s behind you.
Let’s start with the minimalist aesthetic—those clean white walls, the carefully placed houseplant, the one piece of abstract art that suggests deep, intellectual thoughts (or just an impulse buy). Minimalism can say, “I have nothing to hide.” It can also say, “I just moved in.” Or, worst of all, “I’m in a Bates-style motel.” If your background is too sterile, people might wonder if you’re in witness protection.
Then there’s the bookshelf flex—a well-curated collection of literature placed strategically behind you for every video call. Is it a real reflection of your interests, or did you stack those philosophy books next to a random poetry collection just to look well-read? If you’ve got a prominently displayed copy of The Art of War, or the Tao of Poo, people will have questions.
What about the couch-centric lifestyle? If your meetings happen from a slouched position with a blanket thrown over you like a medieval king, you’re broadcasting comfort, possibly too much of it. A couch-dominated setup can say, “I have fully given up on the desk life.” It can also scream, “This is a no-judgment zone,” which, honestly, is kind of nice.
And then there’s the outer space background—a digital swirl of galaxies that tells the world you are either deeply fascinated by the universe or just clicked on the default Zoom option. Outer space can mean endless curiosity, or it can be a convenient way to hide your messy kitchen. But if your background is a cosmic landscape, ask yourself: Does this represent my infinite imagination or is it broadcasting a bigger void in my life?
Your space, whether online or in real life, is giving out clues. Is it the message you want to send, or are you just letting your subconscious do the decorating? Maybe it’s time to think about how you’re framing yourself—literally. A cluttered background can suggest creativity or chaos. A blank wall might mean simplicity or a complete lack of personality. A gallery of framed art could show refined taste—or that you spent too much time on Pinterest.
But here’s the real question: Are you actually showing up? Or is your background doing the heavy lifting? It’s easy to hide behind a well-placed book stack, a tasteful gallery wall, or a perfectly arranged houseplant. Maybe all of this is just pop psychology—a fun way to analyze the signals we send without thinking.
So, is your space a reflection of you, or is it an avatar—your personality distilled into a curated backdrop, you as an emoji? And if it’s an avatar, is that a bad thing? Maybe it’s just a smarter way of showing up, a way to control the narrative. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s time to stop relying on the bookshelf flex, the digital galaxy, or the blank wall mystery and just be real—messy, imperfect, and actually present. Because in the end, people aren’t talking to your background. They’re talking to you.

1 周I'm old school, and sometimes it feels like a big part of our lives has moved online and gotten consolidated into a Tic-Tac-Toe box. Still, the next move is ours!? ??

1 周Lon Pilot, we were just talking about space again...
I love this concept! From my own experience I can attest to it working wonderfully! I once had a video interview with a Dutch CEO and strategically placed a fresh bouquet of tulips in the background. He noticed and it got us talking about our love for flowers and house plants. The conversation flowed with ease from then on.... and I got the job! ??
