To Dress or Not to Dress, that is the question!

To Dress or Not to Dress, that is the question!

I'm sure like me you wrestle with this question regularly! What is appropriate for the job, the meeting, the client, the event, the seminar, the evening etc...

Over the years for me it's been suit and tie, polo shirt and jacket, suit and shirt, no tie. Casual trousers and jacket, smart shoes, hoody jeans and trainers and finally these days, smart shirt, jacket and/or waistcoat, jeans and smart shoes.... phew, identity crisis or what :)

The second question is how do you set the code/standard for your team? Do you have a dress code, are you flexible? Do you rely on your team's own selection/choice? Are you disappointed by what you see? How do you hold people to account for maintaining a standard? So many questions....

Does the way someone dresses when you meet them create a positive or negative impact, do you trust them more or less depending on how they dress, and does it say how competent they are at their job?

It thought it would be good practice to lay out the negatives and positives of the 3 definitions I usually use; Smart, Smart Casual, and Informal. Let's take a closer look:

  1. Smart:

Positives:

  • Professionalism: Smart dress, such as suits and blazers and tie, can convey a sense of professionalism, authority, and competence, which can be crucial in formal and traditional work environments.
  • Traditional expectations: In specific industries, adhering to a smart dress code may be seen as a sign of respecting and adhering to conventional norms and expectations of dress, which can help establish credibility and trust with clients, customers, and colleagues.
  • Consistency: A smart dress code can create a consistent and unified appearance among employees, contributing to a sense of team cohesion and a polished overall company image.

Negatives:

  • Comfort and flexibility: Smart dress can sometimes be perceived as less comfortable and less flexible than more casual dress codes, which may restrict movement and comfort during long work hours.
  • Cost: Smart dress, particularly formal business attire, can be more expensive than other dress codes, as it often requires higher-quality materials and accessories.
  • Perceived as too formal: In some industries or work environments, wearing smart dress may be seen as overly formal or outdated and may need to align with the culture or expectations of the workplace.

2. Business Casual:

Positives:

  • Flexibility: Business casual dress allows for more flexibility and comfort compared to smart dress while still maintaining a professional appearance. This can give employees more choices and options regarding clothing, contributing to a positive work environment.
  • Modern and approachable: Business casual attire can be seen as more contemporary, approachable, and relatable to clients, customers, and colleagues, particularly in creative or more relaxed work environments.
  • Cost-effective: Business casual attire is often more affordable than formal business attire, which typically includes more relaxed and accessible clothing items.

Negatives:

  • Ambiguity: Business casual can be subjective and open to interpretation, which may result in confusion or inconsistency in terms of what is considered appropriate. This may require more precise guidelines or employer communication to ensure employees understand the expectations.
  • Lack of formality: In more formal or traditional work environments, business casual may not be perceived as professional enough, and employees may need to balance comfort and professionalism.
  • Potential for unprofessional appearance: Without clear guidelines, there is a risk of employees interpreting business casual too casually, resulting in attire that may be too informal or unprofessional for the workplace.

3. Informal Dress:

Positives:

  • Casual and relaxed: Informal dress codes, such as T-shirts and jeans, can create a casual and relaxed work environment where employees can feel more comfortable and at ease. This can contribute to a laid-back and approachable company culture where creativity and innovation can thrive.
  • Flexibility and self-expression: Informal dress codes often offer more flexibility and room for self-expression, allowing employees to showcase their personal style and individuality. This can foster a sense of inclusivity and authenticity among employees.
  • Cost-effective and accessible: Informal attire, such as T-shirts and jeans, can be affordable and easily accessible, making it a practical option for employees who may not have to invest in expensive formal business attire.

Negatives:

  • Lack of formality and professionalism: Informal dress codes may not be appropriate in more formal or professional work environments or when interacting with clients or customers who have higher expectations around appearance. It may not convey a sense of professionalism or competence in certain settings.
  • Ambiguity and potential for inconsistency: Informal dress codes can sometimes lack clear guidelines, resulting in ambiguity and inconsistency in terms of what is considered appropriate or not. This may require employers to provide clearer communication or guidelines to ensure that the team understands the boundaries.
  • Perception of unprofessionalism: Without proper care and attention to grooming and neatness, informal attire may come across as sloppy or unprofessional, which can impact the overall impression and reputation of the company.

The appropriateness of an informal dress code, such as a T-shirt and jeans, depends on the industry, company culture, and specific workplace of course. You should establish clear guidelines and communicate expectations to ensure that your team maintains a professional image that aligns with the company's values and the expectations of its clients or customers.

I'd love to hear your thoughts....

The change is startling - what was the norm then and now! Every morning when I get dressed I see a box of ties sitting in the corner that I haven't worn for probably 15 years and then I see the suits hanging there that only come out for weddings and the odd funeral. For me is is all about presenting yourself in a smart way - and I don't mean just what you are wearing - how you present yourself, how you speak and how you treat people.

Interesting read Simon. I’ve definitely noticed a change in general work attire over the last few years. We have a very relaxed dress code in the office and everyone enjoys that. If I’m interviewing I will wear what I call office attire, it’s the same when I’m at an external event representing the business- or I might wear RiskSTOP branded clothing.
