Dress Like John Day!
Good Chemistry Nurseries
Growers and breeders of premium small batch cannabis.
John Sockwell is our Director of Cultivation in Massachusetts, and, along with his wife, Summer Winton, our Director of Production, oversees the cultivation, extraction, and production operations across the state. We had a chance to sit down with John to ask him a few questions.
Q: How long have you worked at Good Chemistry, and what has it been like?
A: Nine years as of last week. I love working at Good Chemistry. Both Summer and I take a lot of pride in working for Good Chemistry and love the GC family. Matthew Huron [owner & CEO], Toby Nuber [COO & CFO], and Heath Byington [Chief Production Officer] have all been great leaders and are truly invested in cannabis. Summer and I found Good Chemistry when we moved to Denver and were shopping around for our go-to store. GC always offered high-quality cannabis at a good price, and that drew us in. Summer was in there shopping one day and asked if they were hiring. The rest is history.
Q: What is your favorite strain, and why?
A: Hard question to answer. All-time favorite has to be Blue Dream. It’s an old school classic that really helps me focus and allows me to get done what needs to get done. But we have so many awesome strains right now - Graham Canyon , Head Hunter , Toasted Mallow - that are all hitting above par. I just love having the right strain for the right time. For example, I have some social anxiety, and when I know I am going out to an event or gathering, I am sure to bring along some Purple Durango OG because I know I can rely on that strain in particular to ease my anxiety and calm my thoughts… It’s been great for the summer concerts in the area.
Q: What is your preferred consumption method?
A: It’s hard to say as a true cannabis enthusiast. They all have their advantages. Carts are good on the go, edibles are great for low key consumption, dabs get you really high, but when it comes down to it, joints are my favorite.
Q: Tell us about the Drippy G and what it’s been like heading the Live Rosin project.
领英推荐
A: This has really come full circle. I started making Rosin before it was really known what it was. I was in Colorado at the time and had to stop because the MED installed new regulations that made it so we needed a specific license to make Rosin. Fast forward about 6 years, and I had the chance to start working with Live Rosin and, along with Heath, developed some really amazing Rosin. Thanks to Matt for bringing this project back, and letting Heath and me really just go for it and make this product the way we, as cannabis enthusiasts, want to do it.
Q: What’s your favorite part of the breeding process?
A: Seeing what new things come from combining new genetics. It’s always so interesting when we see strains with the same parents come out completely different. Most of the time they each have their beneficial qualities that are exclusive to that pheno.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working with cannabis?
A: Working with the plant itself. I have been a big believer in cannabis since I was 18. It was a self-discovery, and I have always seen the benefits of the product medicinally and recreationally. Some days, when I’m working with the rosin, I miss the plants.
Q: Ok, tell us about the hair on fire story.
A: I realized the benefits of cannabis when I was young, working with disabled vets. A lot of them used cannabis for medical purposes, and one patient who was hooked up to oxygen lit up a joint, and his oxygen just lit up. His hair caught on fire, but everything ended up just fine… lesson learned.
Q: How long have you rocked the bald head big beard?
A: Been rocking it for 6 years… they asked me to start doing it when I was working in the garden back in Denver because it was the CO thing to do.. About 6 weeks in, I started getting compliments and there was no going back. Also, Heath says if I shave the beard, I won’t have a job haha.
