Dress for the Job You Want

Dress for the Job You Want

Earlier this week, our director, Kerri-Ann Hargreaves , asked the question:

Would you wear a hoody in an online interview?

?

The reaction was intense, to say the least, but it is always interesting to hear a topic discussed with such passion!

Here are some of the comments we received…

‘I'm an old-fashioned girl so no and I know it could stand in the way of an interviewer seeing the real me.’

?

‘What people wear does not define them, and whilst the impression would have an impact, I wouldn't refuse to hire on clothing.’

?

‘Personally, I wouldn't judge people. Then again, I would hope people have the commonsense to think about the role they are going for when deciding what to wear for an interview.’

?

‘It shouldn't matter what you wear, it should be about how you present yourself in the interview.’

?

‘First impressions are everything. It's all relative.’

?

Our poll results show that 79% of people would not wear a hoodie to an interview as they believe it is unprofessional.

The reality of the situation is that in our current society, there are still people who will judge and discount you purely based on clothing, whether this be right or wrong.

If you are in a position where you can say ‘I will wear this hoody and if they don’t like me for it then I don’t want the job’ then that is okay, but most people aren’t.

Most people go for an interview because they either want or need a new position and so by dressing professionally as default, you are avoiding the chance of any judgments being made that could hinder this.

Here at IronMarket Talent, we believe in self-expression and being comfortable in your own skin but, you should consider your audience in a professional environment if you want to interact with less risk of judgment.?
