The Dream Team: Can they go all the way?

The 3-1 success for the Lionesses yesterday was something that, as someone who works closely with many large teams, inspired me. Throughout the World Cup, we have watched these girls grow game-in and game-out to become the well-oiled machine that will enter the final on Sunday.?

They have demonstrated that they are a true "pride of lions" on the football pitch. Yet, when organisations cast their gaze upon their own teams, the same sense of pride seems elusive.

Goals are, of course, the deciding factor in football, and every player in the team is ultimately aiming towards a goal. They fulfill their different roles on the pitch whilst remaining focused on the overall goal. This should be like your team in the workplace, everyone should be working together towards the exact same goal. That is your vision, your mission statement. Establish a goal that excites and resonates, and watch your team align their efforts towards a common crescendo of success.

?Underneath the cheers and the chants of a football game, lies a crucial part of their success. That is their communication. The players constantly communicate with each other, providing ideas and insights to every member on the pitch when and where they can. Each player, with their unique role, contributes to the greater symphony of success. Picture this mirroring your team in the corporate arena – a united front, diverse in roles but unwavering in focus. The answer to this? Open channels that transcend hierarchies, encourage feedback and facilitate seamless information flow.?

You also need to ensure that your team understands each other because then they can adapt to each other. Ever wonder how, despite playing in different teams, with different players, in different countries, when footballers are called to play for their country, they merge into a powerhouse on the pitch??It's because they understand each other. This deep understanding is their catalyst for success, transforming potential weaknesses into strategic advantages. Adopt this art of understanding in the workplace with the DISC methodology. Implement DISC assessments to uncover the unique blend of personalities within your team. You can then learn how to adapt to your team to get the best results!

Great article, Alison. I think one of the biggest issues I hear and see when working with managers and leaders is the lack of clearly defining and communicating the vision and identifying each team member's purpose. It's not that they lack a vision, mission, or purpose; it's that they lack communication. For me, the vision and purpose are what drives us every day to want to think bigger, be better, and achieve more. This is one thing Sarina Wiegman does really well: She talks about the team's vision and purpose and helps each team member define their own purpose. Unless leaders communicate this on a daily basis, it will get lost in the crowd.
