Dream. Plan. Do.

When I think of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I recall how growing up in Memphis, TN, the world would be forever changed on my 9th birthday, the day after which MLK was assassinated in my hometown. I have spent the last 50+ years growing older but also working to be more enlightened about what Martin Luther King stood for and still does today.

Monday, Jan. 16, we will celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday, a national holiday in the United States of America, observed the third Monday every January. Banks will be closed and so will government buildings.

Coretta Scott King, Dr. King’s widow who is now deceased, described Martin Luther King holiday this way – “This is not a black holiday, it is a people’s holiday. And it is the young people of all races and religions who hold the key to the fulfillment of his dream.”

According to Wikipedia - King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968.

DREAM

Watch Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech: and/or read these amazing, thought-provoking quotes from MLK and ask:

  • What would my 9 year old self-think about what he is saying?
  • What do these MLK quotes mean to me and how do they motivate me to be anti-racist?

PLAN

These homages to Dr. King may spur you to visit one of these museums in person, livestream an event, listen to one of Dr. King’s speeches or listen to music inspired by King’s legacy.

Dr King’s unselfish example of courage created in me an unbridled passion for service expressed professionally in hospitality, community not for profit board membership over 20 times, and mentoring for the future.
